  2. Carvalho 'was the difference'published at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2024

Hull City had Fabio Carvalho, who has come in from Liverpool, and that was the difference.

Hull kept Sunderland as quiet as possible and then nicked a goal.

This was the biggest game of the season for Liam Rosenior, it's not been easy, but coming to Sunderland and keeping them quiet is brilliant.

It's a huge win that gets them back into the top six.

    Sunderland 0-1 Hull City

Fittingly the match ends with Hull City manfully defending a Sunderland corner.

Huge three points for the Tigers that moves them back up to sixth after a sticky patch.

The game improved after a really poor first half and the away side took the lead against the run of play with 20 minutes to go when Fabio Carvalho's deflected shot gave him his first City goal.

Thereafter Sunderland huffed and puffed but never really looked like blowing Hull's house down.

It's just five goals in seven matches as Black Cats boss for Michael Beale now and the home fans let their feelings be known at the full time whistle.

    Peter Swan
Former Hull City player on BBC Radio Humberside

How many times have I said certain players can win you games when it is in the balance.

Yes, it took a deflection, but for Fabio Carvalho to get a shot away the way he did and then it goes into the corner. Instinctive.
