    Neil Maddison
Former Middlesbrough midfielder on BBC Tees

It is good play, but Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tom Glover will be disappointed with that.

I have just seen the replay of the goal and my opinion has not changed. I think his reaction to it says it all.

GOAL: Middlesbrough 1-1 Sunderlandpublished at 83 mins

    Nazariy Rusyn

    Told you.

Boro keeper Tom Glover won't want to see that again.

Sunderland sub Nazariy Rusyn tries a speculative half-volley from the edge of the box. Glover gets a big hand on it but it squirms past him at his near post.

    From nothing, Sunderland are level.

  3. Postpublished at 82 mins

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Sunderland

For all their second-half dominance, Middlesbrough's lead is slender, and Sunderland do have the knack of finding late goals.

How Michael Carrick would love a second their performance deserves.

    Mark Drury
    BBC Tees commentator

48 hours ago, Middlesbrough's Samuel Silvera was a substitute in Qatar, watching his Australian national team go out of the Asian Cup.

Now, he is out on the pitch in the Tees-Wear derby.

Sometimes, you think that stories like that deserve a certain ending.

  5. CLOSE!published at 79 mins

Sunderland have offered next to nothing after the break but go within inches of an equaliser.

Jack Clarke swings a free-kick into the box from the left and Dan Ballard flicks a header just past the far post.

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Sunderland

    Mark Drury
    BBC Tees commentator

Middlesbrough's Marcus Forss grabbed hold of both hamstrings and stretched them out.

He has only recently returned from a three-month injury.

But he has been the difference maker in this game.

He applauds the stands because his goal has Boro on course for three points.

A super Hollywood crossfield pass from Boro full-back Luke Ayling almost sends Sam Greenwood away down the right, but just bounces into touch.

Greenwood has covered some distance today. Ayling is enjoying himself.

  10. 'Forss looks good playing out wide'published at 13:31 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Sunderland

    Neil Maddison
Former Middlesbrough midfielder on BBC Tees

Marcus Forss' work rate off the ball is just needed.

He shows quality for Middlesbrough on that right side as well.

He is not a striker, that wide position is a good one for him.

I think he has blown a gasket though. He is looking a little tired.

  11. 'Clarke looking frustrated'published at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Sunderland

    Mark Drury
    BBC Tees commentator

Sunderland's Jack Clarke is looking more and more frustrated out there.

Boro are looking to do the double over the Black Cats.

Nothing like a goal to lift supporters out of their stupor.

Middlesbrough fans are running through the songbook now having seen their team take the lead.

There one supposedly to the tune of OMD's 'Enola Gay' but the tune has definitely got lost in the wash somewhere. Catchy though.

Bit like those versions of Billy Ray Cyrus' 'Achy Breaky Heart' you hear on the terraces that are a tuneless mumble til it gets to "Just don't think you understand" and you go - oh aye, that's what they're 'singing'.

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Sunderland

    Nick Barnes
    BBC Newcastle's Sunderland commentator

Sunderland need to get a grip of this game.

They are 1-0 down, and at the moment, it is all Middlesbrough.

The ball breaks for them, Sunderland's Jobe Bellingham gets a foot on it, but it goes straight back to a Middlesbrough player.

That is a beautifully-worked set piece by Middlesbrough.

Something that we haven't seen for some time.

Marcus Forss' first touch is beautiful.

What a finish, what a touch!

Into the back of the net with lots of power.

    A breakthrough worth waiting for!

A deflected Sam Greenwood shot falls into the path of Marcus Forss 10 yards out.

His first touch is to flick the ball up with his left foot. He then swivels and smashes a volley into the bottom left corner of the net. Superb finish.

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson is a lucky boy.

The deflection came off of Middlesbrough's Marcus Forss and Patterson is lucky that it goes off his near post.

Boro have been the force in the second half. They have tried to probe and create opportunities.

    Lucky chap.

Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson dawdles on the ball as he looks to pick a pass with Marcus Forss and Sam Greenwood bearing down on him.

Fortunately for him his attempted pass hits Forss and goes wide rather than in the net.
