  3. What the stats saypublished at 17:26 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    Brighton v Chelsea (17:30 GMT)

    • Brighton and Hove Albion have won just one of their 10 WSL meetings with Chelsea (D2 L7), coming from a goal down to win 2-1 in February 2021 at Kingsmeadow.
    • Chelsea are unbeaten in all five of their away matches against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Women’s Super League (W3 D2), conceding just once across those games; the Blues have only travelled to West Ham (W5) as often without suffering defeat in the competition.
    • Although they’ve only had 11 Opta-defined big chances in the WSL this season, Brighton have the best big chance conversion rate of any team (73%), scoring eight of those 11 big chances. Opponents Chelsea have had the most big chances (46) and have the second-best conversion rate (54%).
    • There have been at least two goals scored in each of Chelsea’s last 16 away Women’s Super League matches, with 59 goals netted in total (W11 D2 L3, 45 for, 14 against). In their last four alone there have been 17 goals scored (W3 L1, 13 for & 4 against).
  4. 'No pressure, nothing to lose'published at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    Brighton v Chelsea (17:30 GMT)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Melissa Phillips, speaking in her pre-match news conference: "The team performed exceptionally well when we had games against the top four in the first half of the season and that's because there's no pressure, there's nothing to lose.

"You go out there, put in a top performance and it's how you can recreate the level and the intensity of those performances consistently over time and against other opposition in the league.

"When you go and play toe-to-toe with a team like Chelsea, you're going to stretch yourself and learn a lot about your shortcomings and where you can continue to build as well."

  5. Chelsea through to Champions League quarter-finalspublished at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    Brighton v Chelsea (17:30 GMT)

It's Emma Hayes' final season as Chelsea boss before she departs to take over the United States, and there's one trophy she's still yet to secure with the Blues - the Champions League.

They're making good work of hoping to change that fact this campaign, winning their group and reaching the quarter-finals by beating Real Madrid 2-1 in midweek.

Chelsea haven't had much time to prepare for today's game, but they're soon back in action when they take on French side Paris FC in their final group-stage game on Tuesday (17:45 GMT)

  6. 'The fans are passionate so you want to get them involved'published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

I would have literally done the same [Lauren James celebrating in front of the United fans].

If she had done it against my team when they played Liverpool I would hate it, but respect to her because they were obviously giving her a bit of grief and shouting at her a lot.

Fair play to her, she scored a hat-trick so why not?

The fans are passionate so you want to get them involved and that moment got them involved a bit more, even if it was Lauren doing it against her old club.

  7. 'James playing in the nine distracts opposing back lines'published at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

In the second half [against Manchester United last weekend] Lauren James went into where Mia Fishel was playing, in that number nine role.

I think it probably takes a little bit away from her individually, but I think her playing as the nine really distracts the back line because they are always worried about where she is.

It changed things a bit for her, she was having to hold the ball up a little bit more, having to make runs into the corner, moving the ball up the pitch - she had to almost take a step back a bit, but it was all for the good of the team I think.

  8. James on firepublished at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    Brighton v Chelsea (17:30 GMT)

She came on as a substitute in Chelsea's Champions League triumph over Real Madrid on Wednesday, but it was last weekend where Lauren James shone as she bagged a hat-trick against Manchester United.

Chelsea won 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, with James scoring all of her goals.

James, the top scorer in the league this season, is important for Chelsea after the loss of star striker Sam Kerr to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

James has scored nine goals in her last five Women’s Super League appearances, netting two hat-tricks in this time (vs Liverpool and Manchester United). She’s the fourth Chelsea player to net two hat-tricks in one season, along with Fran Kirby (2018-19), Bethany England (2018-19) and Kerr (2020-21).

It's a chilly night down in Crawley as Brighton hope to upset the league leaders and edge closer to the top half of the table.

I was in Lancing yesterday, the home of Brighton's elite training ground centre, as Melissa Phillips and her staff were preparing the team.

She spoke to media alongside captain Vicky Losada and the key message was clear - she wants her players to be brave, to be clinical, stick to their own game and not be drawn in by Chelsea's pressure.

Brighton performed pretty well in back-to-back games against Chelsea and Manchester United earlier this season but mistakes proved costly.

Emma Hayes' side will therefore know the test that awaits them but that Chelsea squad, fresh from booking their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League, rarely fail these tests.

There were plenty of travelling Chelsea fans waiting to greet the team at the entrance when I arrived earlier.

  14. Chelsea sign Ramirez for British recordpublished at 17:04 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    Brighton v Chelsea (17:30 GMT)

Chelsea have signed Colombian striker Mayra Ramirez from Spanish side Levante - and they've done so for a British record transfer fee.

The Liga F side have announced they will receive 450,000 euros (£384,000) for the Colombia forward, plus up to 50,000 euros (£42,600) in add-ons.

Ramirez, who is on the bench today, has scored six times in seven games for Levante this season.

The 24-year-old becomes the most expensive women's player in British history, overtaking Jill Roord who joined Manchester City from Wolfsburg for more than £300,000 in 2023.

If all the add-ons are paid then the Ramirez deal would be a new world record, surpassing England midfielder Keira Walsh's move to Barcelona for £400,000 in 2022.

    Good evening.

Are you excited for a bit of Saturday night Women's Super League action?

League leaders Chelsea travel to the south coast tonight to take on Brighton, who beat Bristol City in a five-goal thriller last weekend, Elisabeth Terland winning it in the fifth minute of added time.

Chelsea have won each of their past five games in all competitions and are on the hunt for a fifth league title in a row. Will they maintain their strong form this evening?

We'll find out soon, but for now let's begin by taking a look at how the teams like up for this one.
