In-form Southampton are hot on the heels of Town now, just three points back from the Blues after their win over Plymouth.

Fifth-paced West Brom beat fourth-placed Leeds to consolidate their spot in the top six and dent the Whites hopes of automatic promotion.

At the other end, Sheffield Wednesday moved off the foot of the table with a 1-0 win at Preston.

Leicester City bring the curtain down on the calendar year by heading eight points clear at the top of the Championship.

Their win at Cardiff, coupled with Ipswich's goalless draw with relegation battling QPR, means Enzo Maresca's Foxes have some serious breathing space at the top now.

Southampton extended their unbeaten run to 17 games with a win against Plymouth, which moves them to within three points of Ipswich and the second of the two automatic promotion spots.

Leeds, however, have lost ground in that race with their defeat at West Brom.

Millwall the big winners of the night with that 1-0 success at home to Norwich to move eight clear of the drop zone.

An excellent point for QPR at Ipswich but they stay four points from safety.

Sheffield Wednesday squeezed out a 1-0 at Preston but they still have six points to make up to escape the bottom three.

Blackburn stay 15th but are heading in the wrong direction after a fourth-straight defeat.

Four without a win for Ipswich but there were mitigating circumstances, they were without so many big-hitters this evening.

Second-placed Ipswich lose ground on Championship leaders Leicester.

The much-changed Tractor Boys are held by a struggling QPR side, who have picked up their first point in four games.

The Hoops will be the ones who leave Portman Road feeling they should have come away with more, having hit the woodwork in the first-half before seeing a late penalty appeal waved away.

The gap to Leicester at the top is now eight points, with third-placed Southampton now just three points adrift of Ipswich in second.

There is a late, late shout for a QPR penalty. It appears there could have been handball in the area after an Ipswich defender misread the flight of a cross.

It's frustration for the Hoops, and relief for Ipswich.

Probably a bit lazy for me to talk about this as being about Leeds' shortcomings in attack but West Brom have been resolute in their defending.

Cedric Kipre makes a timely header to stop Patrick Bamford from getting in at the back stick.

Leeds chuck on Junior Firpo and Mateo Joseph for the time added on at the end.

Six of those minutes to be played.

Adam Reach has scored a decent goal or two against Leeds in his time.

He's played through the middle by John Swift's cever ball over the top and looks to lift it over Karl Darlow with his first touch.

His shot doesn't quite have the legs though and Darlow keeps it out.

Jeremy Sarmiento is on for birthday boy Brandon Thomas-Asante, 25 today, for the home side for the closing minutes.

This will move fifth-placed West Brom up to three points off fourth-placed Leeds.

Leeds will be nine points off second-placed Ipswich if this stays as it is and Ipswich don't grab a late, late winner at Portman Road.

There will be eight (yes, eight) minutes of injury time at the end of this delayed game.
