Not an ideal start with the injuries for Middlesbrough and they have had to change the style.

Cole Palmer has had some unbelievable opportunities his first one was gifted from Jonny Howson.

Boro have to be happy and Michael Carrick will be pretty pleased, but Chelsea can get chances and they can create from nothing.

Boro just need to cut out the sloppy mistakes in the second half.

The Championship side lead at the break in the first leg through Hayden Hackney's goal.

Chelsea ending the half strongly. Cole Palmer shoots at goal, but Tom Glover makes a good save, low down to his right to save the effort with his right arm.

The keeper then gets lucky as the ball bounces off Enzo Fernandez straight back into Glover's grasp.

It looks really easy, but Cole Palmer does not expect it.

You expect the net to ripple, he has got to score that and it is a terrible miss!

That should be 1-1. Boro keeper Tom Glover can't hold on to a shot from Enzo Fernandez and it falls to Cole Palmer with the goal gaping, but he can only shoot it over the top.

Earlier today, Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen agreed to join Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old will sign a two-year contract extension with Chelsea before linking up with the Bundesliga club. The deal does not include an option for Dortmund to make the deal permanent.

Middlesbrough are pushing for a second and Lukas Engel swings in a cross from the left, close to the touchline and this time Levi Colwill is able to head it clear.

Anon: Surely Caicedo is the biggest waste of money in the Premier League this season? Misses easy passes, doesn't stop any attacks, doesn't offer any goal scoring threat. And was asleep during Middlesbrough's goal.

What a goal, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a change at half time at left-back for Chelsea.

Phenomenal goal and phenomenal noise!

We talked about it before the game, we talked about the left-back who is not a left-back - Levi Colwill is a centre back.

Noni Madueke is looking a real threat for Chelsea down the right wing. He skips past Lukas Engel with relative ease, but the cross into the middle is hacked behind by Dael Fry.

Cole Palmer looked so confident when he hit the ball there. A terrible mistake from Jonny Howson.

What a chance for Chelsea. Jonny Howson gifts the ball to Cole Palmer, but on his left foot he can't capitalise and shoots wide after getting to the edge of the box.

Straight down the other end and Hayden Hackney shoots from the edge of the area but pulls it wide of the far post.

It's getting much better. Chances are starting to come for both sides.

Chelsea's Cole Palmer sends in a cross following a short corner and Levi Colwill gets his head to it, but under pressure he can only loop it over the top.

Seconds later Colwill then gets a booking for bringing down Isaiah Jones and has to watch himself for the next hour.
