Not a Liverpool or Henderson fan but I think he should get credit for owning the decision and making a more positive move. Plenty would just take the ridiculous salary.

  2. 'A football decision to come here'published at 13:21 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

    Ajax

Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson on his current physical condition: "We'll have to wait and see. Of course it's up to me to show how good I am on the pitch in training every day and in the games.

"I am ready to play ASAP but I have to wait for things like work permits and stuff. As soon as everything is good and ready I'll be good to go."

On whether it was a football or family decision to join Ajax: "It was a very much a football decision. Of course I have to make the decision based on what's best for me and my family as well.

"The decision to come here was a football decision. Like I said before it's a huge opportunity for me personally. I cannot fault Ajax for the faith they have shown me and the opportunity they have given me to come to this great football club.

"I just want to get going. I am excited to be here. I want to get going, get training and get playing to show them what I can do."

  3. 'A great opportunity to come to a huge club'published at 13:17 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

    Ajax

Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson on why he picked the club: "Because it's one of the biggest clubs in the world. The biggest club in Holland. I felt as though it was a great opportunity for me personally to come to a huge club and try to help this club go forward and be as successful as possible."

On reports he did not return to the UK for tax reasons and why not another team in Europe given Ajax's poor season: "Don't believe what you read in the press, I would say is a little bit of advice! It had nothing to do with anything else but a football decision.

"I felt it was the perfect opportunity for me to come to such a huge club and showcase what I've tried to do in my life which is dedicate myself to football and be as successful as possible.

"I feel as though the welcome here is incredible. I am overwhelmed to be given the opportunity at this great football. I want to repay the faith shown me to bring me here. Over the next two-and-a-half years. I will dedicate my life to making this football to get it back on track and be as successful as possible."

Why is it a big deal Henderson doesn't settle in Saudi Arabia? Many players don't settle in different countries or even different cities within the same country.

  5. Henderson arrives at Ajaxpublished at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

    Ajax

Jordan Henderson has arrived for his news conference, wearing a beige coat over a white t-shirt, and taken his seat alongside Ajax boss John van't Schip.

The pair are flanked by the torso of two headless manikin dummies with Ajax shirts bearing Henderson's name on them.

We'll see if Henderson follows in the footsteps of the great Steve McClaren and adopts a Dutch accent when speaking to local journalists.

  6. 'A poor look all round'published at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Senior Saudi sources insist they are unperturbed by Jordan Henderson's exit, accepting he was unsettled and happy to cut a quick deal to solve the problem. Behind this, however, they will be surely be badly wounded by his desire to leave after a matter of months.

Henderson's short stint in Saudi was marked by poor results while playing in front of meagre crowds that, on occasion, did not even reach four figures. Al-Ettifaq, struggling in eighth place in the league, have an average home attendance of 7,854 in a 35,000-capacity stadium.

It is hard to argue that this is not a desperately poor look all round.

Henderson is the first major player to leave from the new influx. He may not hold that sole status for long. BBC Sport has also been told Karim Benzema has doubts about staying at Al-Ittihad after signing for the Jeddah-based club on a three-year deal last June.

  7. Wolves prepare for Brighton trippublished at 12:54 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Brighton v Wolves (Mon, 19:45 GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil is due to speak to the media any moment now ahead of his side's trip to Brighton on Monday.

O'Neil spoke very eloquently in the week about how diligent the Wolves hierarchy have been when it came to meeting Profit and Sustainability thresholds and not risking being charged by the Premier League, as has happened with Everton and Nottingham Forest.

It will be interesting therefore if O'Neil has any update on his search for a striker.

Wolves has been linked with Armando Broja and Danny Ings but they would both appear to be out of their reach from a financial perspective.

So Roy’s message to Palace fans is: no transfer news, no improvements in injuries, still no faith in young players and an empty sentiment to improve our awful, awful run. Riveting and inspirational. The atmosphere at Selhurst Park is going to get even spicier, I’d wager.

  9. O'Neil 'has been a breath of fresh air'published at 12:47 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Gary O’Neil has been a real breath of fresh air.

Wolves have got resources, they play with confidence and they have also been able to sit in at times and withhold pressure.

O'Neil would like to go into the transfer market to strengthen a couple of areas but he knows he is limited on funds. He might have to move a few out to do that, and that is what he’s looking to do.

At the beginning of the season, people did not think Wolves had a chance and they could be the ones looking at relegation after his late arrival meant he did not get pre-season with them.

But he has moved a few [players] around and got some results. His squad is looking stronger but I still think he needs a bit of help.

He needs a couple of players who can play how he wants rather than him looking at the squad and having to adapt to them.

Off to watch Gillingham v Forest Green tomorrow and have seats in earshot of the benches. I must therefore be one of the few people disappointed to hear of Troy Deeney's sacking.

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson on the fans: "I think we’re going to give them a little bit more cheer in the second half of the season if we get players back and start playing the way we can.

"I know they’ll stick with us, cheering the team on, but up to us to give them something to cheer about."

Young managers struggle. Look at Wayne Rooney with the Birmingham job. Or Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. And then you have ones like Graham Potter that didn’t get a chance at a bigger club. And less said about Gary O'Neil and Eddie Howe. Oh wait. They all had chances and the good ones have taken it. Sorry but Troy Deeney was a great player with an awful personality. Those agreeing with what was said need to learn employment law. Would you like your boss to reprimand you in front of all your colleagues? Now imagine what that’s like when it’s to the press. He could have had respect for the players he barely knew (six games) and should have spoken to them first. But his ego meant he thought he could go in there and do what he wanted. His nature meant he thought his mere presence would elevate the team. He should be ashamed of himself.

  14. 'Not easy' for Francapublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Arsenal v Crystal Palace (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson on Franca: "If you’ve come here from Brazil like [Matheus] Franca, you’ve come here with dreams of taking the Premier League by storm.

"But he’s young. These players have to come to terms with the fact it’s not going to be easy coming into a Premier League side.”

Arsenal v Crystal Palace (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson on injuries: "Unfortunately, the ones who were out before the game on Wednesday are still out."

On Jesurun Rak-Sakyj: “Unfortunately, we still have one more obstacle to clear. We haven’t seen that much of him this week.”

Zero sympathy for Troy Deeney. Undermining your own players, saying you don't care about them, what on earth did he expect?

  19. Deeney dismissed by Forest Greenpublished at 12:07 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Troy Deeney was yesterday sacked as Forest Green Rovers boss after just six games in charge of the League Two side.

Deeney, who was in his first managerial role, apologised earlier this week for criticising his own players following defeat by Harrogate, saying he allowed his emotions to get the better of him.

Rovers are seven points from safety at the bottom of League Two.

Deeney was appointed head coach on 20 December following the sacking of David Horseman.

He had joined the Gloucestershire team in a player-coach role last summer.

Rovers chairman Dale Vince said: "These are decisions nobody likes to make, but we have acted this way to give Forest Green Rovers the best possible chance of improving results and climbing the league table."

According to the gossip, United will revamp their defence if "significant" offers are made for Maguire and Lindelof... Looks like their defence won't be revamped, then.
