  2. 'He might get the goals that win a title'published at 11:48 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp discussed Al-Ittihad forward Karim Benzema and his links to Arsenal and Chelsea in the January window on the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast.

Redknapp said: "It's a gamble and it's short term. Could you take him to Arsenal to the end of the season? He isn't going to come to the end of the season probably. But you know, he might come in and might get the goals that could push them up and win a title for them.

"If it was just money, he would just stay there and take the money, wouldn't he? He must want to play somewhere, you know, so now if he comes here, someone's going to have to, they'll probably have to subsidise his wages as you say."

Regarding Jordan Henderson. If the salaries are to be believed. Six months and he earns £18,200,000, so not too shoddy. Financial security for his family and a bit of a break before returning to more competitive football.

  4. 'Miserable episode concludes for Henderson'published at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Jordan Henderson's hasty retreat from Saudi Arabia to Ajax concludes a miserable episode in a previously exemplary career - one which had been conducted with a sure touch up until last July.

Henderson's arrival was designed to be another shining symbol of the Saudis' unstoppable momentum in the sport, joining iconic figures such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema as their standard bearers. And yet he could not even last a full season in Saudi Arabia.

The past six months have damaged Henderson's reputation, particularly over his commitment to LGBTQ+ causes he had previously championed.

His exit has also hurt the image of the Saudi Pro League to the outside world, something it can ill-afford so early in its development and with the country determined to use it as the launchpad for its bid to stage the 2034 World Cup.

  5. Bayern interest in Trippierpublished at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Bayern Munich have expressed an interest in Newcastle full-back Kieran Trippier.

The 33-year-old's contract still has another 18 months to run and it is not entirely clear whether the Magpies would be willing to let Trippier leave.

However, Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel is known to be a fan and would like to get a deal done if the German giants were given any encouragement.

Re: Chris 10:03. Henderson is big enough, old enough and wise enough to have made his own decision. He knew what he was doing. Clearly went for £700k a week.

  7. 'A real test without Salah'published at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Bournemouth v Liverpool (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

We've seen how Manchester City have done without Erling Haaland up front in the past few weeks - now it is Liverpool's turn to cope without Mohamed Salah, who is away with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Reds are without the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold too, which is another big blow, especially for a tricky game like this one.

I hope Liverpool win, just as I hope Arsenal beat Palace, because I want to see a title race that goes to the wire and City's form is beginning to look ominous.

The defending champions have already welcomed one 'bazooka' back from injury in Kevin de Bruyne to boost their attack, and they have got another to come when Haaland is fit again.

This is going to be a real test for Jurgen Klopp's side, though. Bournemouth lost at Tottenham in their last league game at the turn of the year but they created enough chances to win that game.

I was sceptical about Cherries boss Andoni Iraola at first, perhaps because Gary O'Neil didn't deserve to be sacked in the summer, but after a slow start he has shown why you should always give new managers time to get their ideas across.

Before that defeat at Spurs, Bournemouth were on a run of seven wins and a draw from their previous eight league matches. They are well-organised and will be poised to press Liverpool, and I have a feeling they will get something from this game.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

  8. Ajax 'sensational' club for Hendersonpublished at 11:08 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Bournemouth v Liverpool (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on Jordan Henderson's decision to leave Saudi Arabia and join Ajax: "I haven't spoken to him about it, no. But I am happy for him because it looks like he's happy and that's the most important thing to me. From time to time I forget that I actually don't read these kind of stories that people are critical of the move, first there and now coming back. All these kind of things.

"I don't know how we dare to judge these kind of things, we have one life and sometimes the decisions are perfect in the first place and sometimes it is different after you make them. He was there and it was 100% an interesting experience.

"When I spoke to him [he said] 99% it was football wise absolutely fine. It's the start of something, not like it is here, and many things to develop there in the future but he was not critical of it. But then he thought it was better for him and his family to come back to come back to Europe. Now he's in Holland.

"Ajax is a sensational club in a difficult moment. Ajax always played the best football when they have combined their real talent with experience. Jordan will be part of that experienced group. From fifth place in Holland you can make steps and it's all positive.

"It's an experience. In England only do people think 'why do they go abroad when all other countries want to come to England?'. As beautiful as this country is it's an international experience [to play in another country]. For me it was the same. He can enjoy football and the family will enjoy it because the city is wonderful. I am very happy for him."

Troy Deeney getting sacked is a sad affair. Not that he didn't deserve the sack because I think it was correct but a young manager who in my opinion will now struggle to get a manager's job in league football if he ever does. These players and managers go on courses in how to act/react but his emotions forgot all that they've been trained and he's just been too honest with the media.

  10. 'Diaz has his smile back'published at 10:59 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Bournemouth v Liverpool (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on signs Luis Diaz is back to hies best: "You might have forgotten but in the past we've had maybe the best front three this club has had in a long time. How we often we sat here with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah and how often we were discussing their drop in form? We discussed it at the time but it never had a big impact so we just let them be.

"If Lucho [Diaz] is not playing great I don't have to tell him, he knows that before I know. It is about faith and trust and time. There was no doubt he would be back, definitely. In general so far we weren't struggling or at creating or scoring, it's how it is.

"It's a general trust and faith we have in the boys and that's why they have spells for two or three weeks after the most challenging time of his life that nobody is prepared for, and he is back. That's good. It's helpful. You can see in each training session it's different. I spoke to him and you cannot not smile when he was on the ball. I missed that a little bit and now that smile is back, so that's really good."

  11. 'Solanke has so much talent'published at 10:49 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Bournemouth v Liverpool (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on facing in-form ex-Reds striker Dominic Solanke: "I am so happy for Dom! Because when we signed him we were so excited about the talent he has. The talent he had here. But we had other strikers here as well. At that time he was not the most clinical but the talent was obvious.

"He made the absolute right decision to go there, through different stages. Last year he scored enough goals last season and is now up there with the greatest. I am so happy for him because a really good kid, wonderful player who has done it the hard way. He tried here but it was maybe a little bit too early but and then moving to Bournemouth. It's really cool for him."

  12. 'Brentford is not only Ivan Toney'published at 10:43 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Brentford v Nottingham Forest (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo on Ivan Toney's return for Brentford: "I know him. He is a good player and a very important player for Brentford, but Brentford is not only Ivan Toney.

"It's a good team so we expect a very tough match tomorrow."

  13. Elanga ruled out of Brentford matchpublished at 10:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Brentford v Nottingham Forest (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo: "We have to balance the squad due to the absences and the numbers in the squad.

"This is the work we are doing.

"We hope [Anthony] Elanga will be back soon, we are not sure yet, but tomorrow for sure he is not available.

"Morgan [Gibbs-White] already did his scan. Unfortunately, he has an injury - he is recovering, he is getting better, but for now he is not available. One more week hopefully.

"We have Felipe, Taiwo [Awoniyi], Divock [Origi], that's enough, more than enough."

  14. 'We respect Bounemouth'published at 10:35 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Bournemouth v Liverpool (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on facing Bournemouth: "When you don't play them at the weekend I really have time to admire what he [Andoni Iraola] is doing at Bournemouth. Obviously a difficult start with the manager change and the results. If you don't look properly at Bournemouth it can happen [that you don't appreciate them] but, wow, they have turned it around and that is proper coaching.

"A really good mix, play football in the right moments with good direction. They use Dominic Solanke in a sensational way with the support he gets from the wings. They are really good, really compact. That's proper.

"But I don't think they are now preparing for us and thinking 'thank God Liverpool is coming'. Because we feel good us as well and I want us to show that too. We are ready for a tough game in the Premier League. I can't remember the last match day when it wasn't tough because it's never happened. They have my respect, definitely."

  15. West Ham interested in Phillipspublished at 10:32 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

West Ham are interested in Manchester City’s England midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

City are willing to let Phillips leave in January after failing to secure a regular place under manager Pep Guardiola.

However, despite interest from numerous clubs already, including Newcastle and Juventus, there has been no agreement, with City’s demand for a loan fee for the former Leeds man said to be a stumbling block.

City believe they are justified in taking their stance given Phillips remains a member of Gareth Southgate’s squad and is likely to go to the European Championships this summer if he can get regular playing time.

West Ham boss David Moyes is eager to strengthen his squad, which has been weakened by a succession of injuries.

Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio are both out for an extended period, whilst Moyes said Mexico midfielder Edson Alvarez had missed Tuesday’s FA Cup defeat at Championship side Bristol City with a calf problem.

  17. 'Trent can walk...on the catwalk!'published at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Bournemouth v Liverpool (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on a Trent Alexander-Arnold's injury after he was pictured at a fashion show in Milan this week: "Obviously he can walk, on the catwalk! The injuries are all positive, but not ready. They [Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai] are all going in the right direction but we will see when they can join first-team training. I don't expect them for Bournemouth.

"I hope that nobody else will be out. After Bournemouth and maybe for Fulham how they do. Trent is close, Robertson close and Dom close. So all going in the right direction but for the weekend's game, no."

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on whether the club's medical staff will travel to Ivory Coast to assess Mohamed Salah's injury: "We will see. It depends on the diagnostics. We will have ultrasound and MRI and then we will know what it is and we will see and make plans, but it's too early [at the moment]."

  19. 'Salah injury definitely something'published at 10:06 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January

Bournemouth v Liverpool (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah's injury: "We don't know anything about it. I spoke with him last night and how it was. They are doing further assessments now and then we will know more.

"At that moment he was shocked and couldn't see why he was hit by something so intense. You have these hamstring injuries in a different way. He felt it and we know how rarely Mo goes off, or needs to go off, so it is definitely something but I don't have any more information right now."

Glad Henderson has managed to make amends. I hope for his sake he has also parted company with whoever suggested moving to Saudi - clearly not done with his interests in mind. He was naive but clearly not bad and he deserves a better team around him influencing decisions.
