That’s it for an eventful night of EFL action.

Derby started the night third in the table and knowing a win would take them top of League One. They’ve ended it in fourth, having lost to troubled Reading while Bolton leapfrogged the Rams by beating Cheltenham.

Thanks for joining us. We’ve got more live football coverage to come from the Carabao Cup and EFL over the next few days!

Charlton have sacked head coach Michael Appleton about half an hour after the final whistle in their 3-2 League One home defeat by Northampton.

The Addicks were 10 league games without victory and are just four points above the relegation zone.

We'll have more on that on the BBC Sport website through the night.

  3. Reading drag teams into relegation scrappublished at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

It's a huge win for Reading over high-flying Derby. They've brought five teams back to within only four points of the drop zone.

And all those teams right up to Burton in 15th will be looking over their shoulder a little now. Wycombe among them, having lost 1-0 at Wigan.

Cheltenham gave it a good go at Bolton but ultimately failed to pick up any points and seven points from safety suddenly sounds a lot, despite their upturn in form under Darrell Clarke.

Exeter made a move away from the drop zone with a 1-0 win at Bristol Rovers.

  4. Bolton capitalise after Derby slip-uppublished at 22:13 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    #bbcefl

Bolton made good use of one of their games in hand - they were made to work by Cheltenham but victory moves the Trotters just two points behind leaders Portsmouth, having played two games fewer.

Not such a good night for Derby, however - defeat leaves them fourth and just a point ahead of Barnsley, who picked up a precious win at play-off rivals Oxford United.

Northampton continue to thrive too, rising to ninth after beating Charlton.

  5. Sutton move off bottompublished at 22:10 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    #bbcefl

Whilst there was frustration for Mansfield, for Sutton, their 1-1 draw means they no longer sit bottom of the pile. Whilst they still sit five points adrift of Colchester, Steve Morison will be happy with their last two results.

They face another away fixture on Saturday, at Walsall, another big game for them. I imagine every match until the end of the season will feel like a cup final in their battle against relegation.

  6. Mansfield miss chance to go secondpublished at 22:09 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    #bbcefl

At the start of the night, many would have guessed Mansfield would end the night in second, but a frustrating draw with Sutton United means they stay in third place.

It was a good night for MK Dons, as their win against Wimbledon means they rise into sixth place, three points clear of Gillingham in eighth place.

However, Wimbledon stay in 10th, and will want to put this night behind them as quick as possible.

It is certainly tight in the race for automatic promotion, and for a spot in the play-offs.

Now that the dust has settled on another fine night of EFL football, let's have a look at the League Two table.

  8. Appleton under fire, wins for Exeter and Wiganpublished at 22:04 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    #bbcefl

Elsewhere in League One, Michael Appleton’s position as Charlton boss could be in doubt after his side lost 3-2 to Northampton at The Valley, where Louis Appere scored a last-gasp winner. It’s now 10 matches without a win for the Addicks and the under-pressure Appleton was barracked by the home fans.

Meanwhile, Sonny Cox’s early goal gave relegation-threatened Exeter a 1-0 victory at Bristol Rovers. It was the 19-year-old striker’s third goal in seven matches and could prove to be a vital one given that fellow strugglers Reading beat Derby.

And there was drama at Wigan, who beat Wycombe 1-0 courtesy of a goal by Charlie Hughes - in the 20th minute of stoppage time. There was a long delay in the second half because referee Adam Herczeg had to be replaced after colliding with a couple of players, prompting the PA announcer to ask if there was a qualified official in the crowd who could step in as the fourth official.

    FT: Reading 1-0 Derby

    Tim Dellor
    BBC Radio Berkshire commentator

It is Reading's eighth win of the season and perhaps their best win of the season.

    Great news for Reading fans.

'Ruben, Ruben, Ruben' is the chant.

The Reading manager, above everybody, deserves that.

    And that's that.

What a way to win, what a way to lose.

Charlie Hughes' volley in the 20th minute of second-half stoppage time has given Wigan victory over Wycombe in the most dramatic of circumstances.

They rise to 11th in League One, while Wycombe are now just four points above the drop zone.

  11. 'Derby lacked goal-threat'published at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    FT: Reading 1-0 Derby

    Darren Robinson
Former Derby coach on BBC Radio Derby

    A disappointing evening all-round.

On paper, this was a perfect opportunity for the Rams. It was a fair and even contest.

I'm sure Derby will be leaning towards the transfer window option. That goal-threat was lacking throughout.

You consistently have pressure on James Collins to lead the line and there is a fatigue effect.

Wigan take the lead in the 110th minute - remarkable!

We had a lengthy delay at the DW Stadium as the referee took a knock to the head and had to be replaced.

But the Latics have fought until the very end, Charlie Hughes volleying home Callum McManaman's cross with surely the latest EFL goal of the season so far.

    Wycombe dejected.

  13. 'Rams lost their rhythm'published at 21:58 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    FT: Reading 1-0 Derby

    Mick Gooding
Former Reading player-manager on BBC Radio Berkshire

Derby made a number of changes and they lost all of their rhythm.

Reading looked more likely to get a second goal in the game.

    An upset in Berkshire.

Derby could have gone top with victory but they've slipped to defeat thanks to Paul Mukairu's goal shortly after half time.

The Rams didn't create much to test the Reading defence, especially in the second half, and stay third in the table.

After two weeks of turmoil, it's quite the boon for Reading but they remain four points from safety.

  15. Derby haven't had a shot on targetpublished at 21:51 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    Reading 1-0 Derby

Derby are doing their best to win back the ball.

This will be back-to-back games without a goal.

No shots on target for the Rams.

    MK Dons 3-1 Wimbledon

This game had it all, four goals, an own goal, and two red cards.

Ultimately, it's MK Dons who come out on top at Stadium MK, with three first half goals doing the job for the hosts on the night.

Wimbledon pulled one back early in the second half through Armani Little, but two reds cards in the space of eight minutes halted any chance of a fightback.

    A thoroughly entertaining match.

Barnsley see out seven minutes of stoppage time to take victory at the Kassam against their promotion rivals.

Sam Long's own goal in the first half was enough and Barnsley move three points behind the automatic promotion places.

Cameron Brannagan struck the bar late on for the home side who stay sixth.

  18. 'Not a night for pretty football'published at 21:48 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    Oxford 0-1 Barnsley

    Matty Taylor
Former Oxford striker on BBC Radio Oxford

Oxford gave it a right good go in the second half.

It was not a night for pretty football.

They didn't really create too many clear-cut chances.

You have to debrief it and move onto the next one.

  19. Draw leaves Stags 'frustrated'published at 21:46 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    FT: Mansfield 1-1 Sutton

    Craig Armstrong
Former Mansfield defender on BBC Radio Nottingham

Mansfield can be disappointed and frustrated.

But, this side is a fantastic side that are carrying a few injuries at the moment.

The conditions haven't helped. I thought the referee was shocking.
