So this is how the bottom of the table looks after tonight's game.

Sheffield Wednesday close the gap to Huddersfield, who face flying Southampton on Saturday, back to five points.

Birmingham's defeat means they're four points above the dotted line and could be just one clear of danger by the end of the weekend.

It's been a difficult 10 days or so with the end of the window and results.

Danny Rohl is a mild-mannered character when you speak to him, but during games like this he's different. He punched the air and shouted "come on" into the cameras at the end. He did what most managers wouldn't do and called this a must-win game.

This was such an important game. Wednesday fans needed a lift this week and they have received it in the form of three points.

Two Ike Ugbo goals have put Wednesday in position to close the gap to five points, with Huddersfield going to Southampton and QPR hosting Norwich.

There are enough teams in this division who are beatable. It's not a great Championship apart from the clash at the top. You have opportunities to win games of football and get yourself out of trouble.

Anon: Wednesday fans watching from Crete! After the last three games, we had decided not to watch tonight in the hope of a change of fortunes...

Long way to go to beat a curse but... Think you're going to have to stay out in Greece if that performance was anything to go by!

It was a fairly abject second-half performance from Birmingham. They're definitely in a relegation scrap now.

The first half had some good points, albeit without scoring. The second half was poor, without being able to change gear.

Struggling Wednesday hold out for their first league win since New Year's Day.

The Owls were ultimately good value for a win that lifts them back to within five points of safety.

Ike Ugbo got both goals, with one in each half.

Birmingham huffed and puffed but really lacked a cutting edge and it's three games without scoring for Tony Mowbray's men now.

Blues are only four points clear of the relegation zone and will watch the rest of the weekend results feeling a little more anxious than they'd like.

There can barely be more than a few seconds left but there's still time for one last set-to.

Michael Smith of Sheffield Wednesday and Krystian Bielik of Blues are both booked for a silly coming together.

  8. Postpublished at 90+6 mins

Real scramble in the Owls area but James Beadle takes charge and and grabs hold of the loose ball.

Impressive showing from the young Brighton loanee tonight.

  9. Postpublished at 90+5 mins

    Sheff Wed 2-0 Birmingham

Birmingham have had a lot of shots from just around the edge of the area tonight and missed the target with just about all of them.

Keshi Anderson is the latest to hit a shot into the side-netting.

What a super strike. It comes back to him in the left-back position and he hits an absolute thunderbolt.

It was only a couple of feet off the ground and through a crowd of players. And a super save, to match.

  11. Postpublished at 90+3 mins

Juninho Bacuna makes great contact with a shot from over 25 yards out as a corner bounces out to him.

He makes a sweet connection to be fair to him but it just swings away from goal and flies past the post at the last.

Feels like it's just not going to happen for Blues.

  12. Postpublished at 90+1 min

    Sheff Wed 2-0 Birmingham

Paik Seung-Ho forces a smart save from James Beadle in the Owls goal.

Decent chances have been few and far between for Blues this half.

The Wednesday fans chant manager Danny Rohl's name.

It's been a strong performance through the team by the Owls tonight.

They shipped four goals in 12 minutes at fellow strugglers Huddersfield last Saturday and could have been a long way back had they lost tonight.

This win will give their survival bid a real shot in the arm.

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 88 mins

    Sheff Wed 2-0 Birmingham

    Final change of the night.

Kristian Pederson is on for the home side against his former side.

Marvin Johnson makes way after a decent night's work down the Owls left.

  16. Gills earn impressive win at Nottspublished at 21:48 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

    FT: Notts County 1-3 Gillingham

It's all over in tonight's League Two game, where Gillingham have won at Notts County to move above them and into the final play-off spot.

The Magpies are now five without a win, while Stephen Clemence's Gills are two points ahead of them.

Oli Hawkins, Max Clark and Conor Masterson with the goals for the visitors, who had trailed early on to a Dan Crowley strike.

  17. YELLOW CARDpublished at 85 mins

    Sheff Wed 2-0 Birmingham

Wednesday midfielder Will Vaulks is booked for a crunching foul on Keshi Anderson.

Those pair have got at each other a few times in the past five minutes or so.

Will Vaulks has come on to be the destroyer and done it really effectively.

Tony Mowbray is making his position very clear to the fourth official. Ashley Cole is joining in as well.

It's just about game management for the home side now.

They'll be content to just keep Blues at arm's length and run the clock down.

This will move them to back within five points of safety.

Blues boss Tony Mowbray is booked for contesting a decision against his side. Rather sums up Birmingham's night as a whole that.

  20. 'Silly to seek a scrap'published at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February

    Sheff Wed 2-0 Birmingham

    Jon Newsome
Former Owls defender on BBC Radio Sheffield

All of a sudden, Birmingham players Keshi Anderson and Lee Buchanan look like they want to scrap with everyone.

It seems a little bit silly in this day and age. When Roy Keane was playing, you could get away with it.
