In his 232nd Premier League appearance, Declan Rice scored in back-to-back games in the competition for the very first time. He has seven Premier League goals (3) and assists (4) in 2024, as many as he had in the whole of 2023 (6 goals, 1 assist).

Jaduh: Arsenal won but Brentford were so poor as was the referee. If either Liverpool or Manchester City win tomorrow then the pressure on Arsenal will be too much. If City win tomorrow and against Arsenal on 31 March then it's a one horse race, so either way a draw tomorrow is the best result for Arsenal .

Arsenal's Kai Havertz, speaking to BBC MOTD: "We wanted to get these points very desperately and we did it and we are very happy.

"It was tough for us, I think we handled it quite well. We conceded an unlucky goal but we believed and did it.

"Everyone in our team all made errors during the season, sometimes when you are a goalkeeper it can look worse. We are all in this together. We spoke about it in the dressing room at half time and turned it around.

"It is nice to score and help the team. Today was very special, so close to the final whistle to win the game.

"Maybe even sometimes these games make you even stronger than winning four or 6-0. The atmosphere was amazing the fans pushed us to the end and they help us as well.

"Everyone is in this together - the players, the staff and the fans."

All of a sudden, it's a much better day for Aaron Ramsdale. I'm sure he'll be thinking about [his error] all night but there is nothing you can do now.

It was maybe a little bit of [a lack of] match sharpness, trying to impress too much. It was one of those horrible moments.

He has so many different options. He has so much time, his first touch is good but he just hesitates and the rest is history.

Arsenal have got the north London derby as well. That will be an interesting match to see where they're at after the Man City game.

That's one to keep an eye on.

Popeye: Well done lads on a close win. Brentford had a lot less possession than Arsenal. Still they gave it a go. Ramsdale dawdling as he can. Three points and top of league. All eyes turn to Liverpool v Man City tomorrow.

  9. 'It was a dive'published at 20:27 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March

    FT: Arsenal 2-1 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford Thomas Frank, speaking to BBC MOTD: "It seems to be the story of our season. We put an unbelievable shift in, fantastic fight.

"We came to the in-form team in the Premier League and we kept them on the minimum. That is almost a defensive masterclass. You could actually argue we probably had the better chances before they scored to go 2-1 up.

"They [the players] were very angry because they felt they were hard done by with the penalty shout with Havertz. You can see the angles, it was clearly a dive. That was a second yellow and then it is 11 v 10.

"I think that was a crucial moment in the game. I hope they admit they got something with them there, because last time there was a lot of complaint about a VAR situation marginally going our way. Hopefully they remember that when they talk after the game.

"Arsenal are a fantastic team, they are doing a top job. We came here with a lot of injuries, no complaints, just even more impressive with our players. Wow."

James Dalton: What a bad time for Ramsdale to make the mistake, but all credit to the lad. I thought he would be a nervous wreck second half but just the opposite with two top saves. No one can question his bottle.

  11. 'Arsenal look stronger'published at 20:22 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March

    FT: Arsenal 2-1 Brentford

    Jamie Redknapp
Former Tottenham midfielder on Sky Sports

After the 6-0, 5-0, 4-1, 6-0, this was a very different game. It was an emotional one that reminded me of last season when there was a bit of chaos and they had to win.

Mikel Arteta won't want too many of those because, in the end, you'll come unstuck.

Is this team better than the one last year? In a lot of ways, yeah. Have they got more points than this time last season? No. But they certainly look a stronger team.

There is still a long, long way to go but they are right in the mix. This is one of the best Premier League seasons we're ever going to have. Three amazing teams.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports: "A really tough opponent to play and we had the game under control at 1-0 but we conceded and then had a beautiful challenge in the second half. We were so aggressive and got rewarded.

"Mistakes are part of football and it's how you react to that. I'm so happy for Aaron [Ramsdale] and I'm so happy that we won the game.

"You have to win every game with the level of Manchester City and Liverpool. There is no space for slip ups. We really had to respond to the challenge in the second half and show our maturity. We were emotionally really mature.

"The whole game the way the fans reacted and the way they push the team is amazing. It is a joy to be there and enjoy a football match with your supporters.

"The hardest thing in elite sport is to do it every three days. The willingness amongst the group is really special. I will have a relaxed Sunday."

Maybe Havertz should have been shown red, but maybe Arsenal should have had a penalty or two. People have very selective memories.

In his 133rd Premier League appearance, Ben White has provided two assists in the same game for the first time, and was the first Arsenal defender to assist twice in a single match in the competition since Hector Bellerín v Sheffield United in October 2020.

Wissa trained everyday with Raya last year and I'm not sure he'd have pressed him in the same way he did Ramsdale.

We've seen all the stats that say Ramsdale is brilliant shot-stopping goalkeeper but the reason he is not in the Arsenal team is [playing out from the back].

It's just a mistake and these things happen but he responded brilliantly in the second half.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to BBC MOTD: "I am really satisfied with the performance and the result obviously, and the manner we did it.

"It was against a team that demands a lot of emotional control and we did in a great way. We showed courage and we were rewarded.

"At 1-0 it could have been a very different game but with the goal we conceded we had to play that game, but in the end we deserved to win the game.

"That is the beautiful thing about this stadium. They support with mistakes. We had certain things we would have to overcome, we were going to do it and we fully believed we would do it."

More pleasing to be top for now or manner of the win? "The manner of the win, 100%. The spirit we showed. Tomorrow will be a great day to watch some fantastic games of football.

"It is not in my hands, it is a joy to be part of this league and a joy to be part of something special that we are trying to achieve."

Chuckles47: Just drag people down in the box, refs have stopped giving them now. It's the same every season, refs say that they are going to get tough on a certain thing but only enforce it for a couple of months.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm so proud of the team and the players. We've come here to Arsenal who have scored 100 goals in I don't know how many games and we limited them. It was almost a defensive masterclass.

"The performance was spot on. Even more impressive if you take into account Arsenal's form, our form, our injury situation. I actually don't think Havertz should be on the pitch when he scored. It was a clear dive. Maybe it is difficult for the ref but the linesman should have seen it.

"We are in that spell where we need to fight so hard for things. You need things to go your way, especially things you can't control like refereeing decisions.

"I'm a big believer that you should celebrate your wins and goals. They clearly respect us and they know we are very good and it meant a lot to them.

"The performance we take out of this is very good. We will take all of the positives and keep on fighting. I told them it was a great performance and that I'm so proud of them. If you get hit in the face then stand up and keep going."

Markyp1965: People complaining about the referee not giving Havertz a second yellow for simulation, but aren’t making any comment about the definite penalty for the pull on Trossard, or the potential foul on Gabriel, which could easily have seen another penalty given.
