HT: West Ham 2-0 Freiburg (Agg 2-1)

    John Southall
BBC Radio 5 Live at London Stadium

West Ham haven't hung about in that first half, scoring twice to make the score 2-1 in their favour on aggregate.

The opening goal set the tone, a diving header from Tomas Soucek, and Lucas Paqueta was on hand to tap in at the back post.

Brilliant second from Jarrod Bowen, cut in from the right, held off his defender and put it into the bottom right hand corner.

Freiburg have offered a threat, Roland Sallai missed at 1-0 and Max Eggestein also missed another chance.

Former West Ham boss Alan Pardew is on co-commentary duties for a commercial radio station this evening.

He has been spotted by a few fans who have asked for pictures during this half-time break.

I was chatting to him earlier on. It hadn't escaped his notice that former bosses Sir Alex Ferguson and Harry Redknapp both had winners at Cheltenham today.

The appointment of Daniele de Rossi seemed like a PR stunt at first. Everyone loved Jose Mourinho so much that it looked like a situation of 'Ok if we bring in a guy that you love just as much then you're not angry with the ownership.' And then maybe the results would change?

But De Rossi graduated from his first Uefa coaching course with the best results alongside Alessandro del Piero. There is no better club to go to than the club you know so well, that you captained, where you became an icon. Being at club you know so well allows you understand the dynamic and start off your career on the right foot.

You already know what the fans expect, what the level of the club is, and that has seen De Rossi do so well at Roma compared to if he was at any other club.

  4. All to play forpublished at 18:44 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

    Rangers 0-0 Benfica

It's half-time at Ibrox and it remains all square between Rangers and Benfica.

After a magnificent 2-2 draw in Portugal last week, all is still to play for in this second half in Scotland.

    Tense stuff.

Hooli 18:17 Another West Ham naysayer. Just before they go 2-0 up. This game could have a massive say on England's 5th CL place and possible 8th place Europa Conference League place, given the opposition is German. Let's just get behind West Ham.

    Martin (neutral)

West Ham v Freiburg could be crucial to Premier League getting an extra Champions League space. Villa and Spurs fans should be rooting for West Ham.

The final day of last season turned into a huge party at Villa Park as Aston Villa held on to beat Brighton 2-1 on a nerve-racking afternoon and secure a return to European competition after a 13-year absence.

Boss Unai Emery called it a 'champagne moment', the players gave emotions interviews as they went on a lap of honour and supporters were in tears.

What made the celebrations even better was no-one could have expected it earlier in the season as Villa were only out of the relegation zone on goal difference when previous boss Steven Gerrard was sacked, with Emery winning 15 of his 25 league matches to take the side seventh.

The celebrations were for nights like tonight.

Villa, European Cup winners in 1982, have not played in the quarter-finals of a major continental competition since the Uefa Cup in 1998 but win tonight against four-time European champions Ajax and they will be in the last eight of the Europa Conference League.

It was 0-0 in the first leg in the Netherlands so is set up perfectly for a dramatic night in front of a raucous sold-out crowd under the lights.

Will it be another night of great celebrations at Villa Park?

    Villarreal 1-0 Marseille

Former Tottenham midfielder Etienne Capoue has given Villarreal the lead as the half-time whistle blows in Spain.

However, there's still a long way to go for the Yellow Submarine after losing 4-0 in France last week.

Darwin Nunez doesn't look like the player we saw score all those goals at Benfica... He is better!

This was a player that finished things when he was at Benfica and when he was at Almeria as well, doing that last touch to make a goal. Now you see he is a much more complete forward.

To start with people focussed on his supposed lack of quality in his finishing and his movement, not realising that every time he made a mistake he would just keep going. His mentality was ignored, but that is what has taken him to where he is now.

He is becoming a world class player, he is not there yet, and I believe Jurgen Klopp when he says they don't know what his full potential is but he looks like he can still improve.

Jarrod Bowen was named in Gareth Southgate's England squad earlier and that was a timely reminder of what he can do.

He had the presence of mind to run across the box, the strength to hold off a marker and the accuracy to drive his effort into the bottom corner.

That's his first European goal this season but his 18th overall.

He missed out on the World Cup. Surely he is going to the Euros?

Well, what a start for West Ham!

Brilliant goal from Jarrod Bowen, held off the defender on the edge of the penalty area and fired a shot low into the bottom corner.

Eighteenth goal of the season, first in the Europa League, called up to the England squad again today. He's got the all important goal for his side in this tie.
