It was a bad night for the Republic of Ireland as they lost 2-0 in their friendly, but more importantly star player and captain Katie McCabe limped off with an injury in the second half.

The Republic of Ireland suffer their first defeat since the World Cup as Wales are the 2-0 victors of tonight's friendly at Tallaght Stadium.

It's certainly been an exciting few days for Wales, who announced Rhian Wilkinson would be the new manager yesterday and have now defeated the Republic of Ireland for the first time in nearly 12 years.

What a chance for the home side!

More changes for the away side as Lois Joel makes her first appearance for Wales with Jess Fishlock making way.

Elise Hughes evening is also over as she is replaced by Kayleigh Barton.

Tanya Oxtoby, Northern Ireland manager: "Our aim was always to stay in this group, so from that perspective it's job done but there are learnings from tonight and we'll take those and we will continue to develop and grow in our journey.

"Every game I've been in charge has been a competitive game. I haven't had a friendly yet. We're on a journey and we'll continually learning and that was another good example of that tonight. We'll go and analyse it and see where we are at."

Tanya Oxtoby, Northern Ireland manager: "I think we got drawn into a transitional game, which is not what we wanted to, from our perspective, we wanted to be able to control it a bit more. We still created a load of chances and probably could have been a bit more clinical, but for me it is the control within the game that we need to learn from.

"We started slow and had to try and claw our way back into it. I thought the changes we made helped with that. Like I said, just a little bit more composure and control in that with the ball, then we don't get ourselves into a transitional situation going both ways and the game gets stretched."

The record crowd at a women's international game at Tallaght Stadium - 8,218 - are certainly encouraging the home side to push forward.

Will they be able to cheer about a goal before full-time?

Worrying signs for the home side as Katie McCabe is injured and unable to play on. She is replaced by Izzy Atkinson.

The visitors also make a change with Rachel Rowe being replaced by Carrie Jones.

We saw more of the Northern Ireland side that performed so well in the first leg in Podgorica in the final 20 minutes of the game here at Windsor Park, but they just couldn't find that second goal that would have put a gloss on the evening and the overall score line.

Still, it is job done and now Northern Ireland can look forward to their Euro 2025 qualifiers beginning in April, safe in the knowledge that they will remain in League B of the Nations League.

Jon Grey makes a triple substitution and brings on Ella Powell, Ceri Holland and Charlie Estcourt for Rhiannon Roberts, Lily Woodham and Angharad James.

The Republic of Ireland have dominated the opening 15 minutes of the second half, but the visitors have dealt with any goal threat the home side have created.

It's all level on the night but Northern Ireland's performance from the first leg helps them to victory in the play-off.

Simone Magill netted an important goal on the night as a draw was enough to retain their place in League B.
