FT: Wales 0-0 Poland (Poland win 5-4 on penalties)

Well, Wales fans, I honestly don't know how to sign this off.

The campaign that started with Nathan Broadhead's miracle equaliser in Split on 25 March, 2023, ends a year and a day later in absolute heartache for Wales, who are eliminated from Euro 2024 qualification by a penalty shootout.

Football is a cruel sport and Wales found that tonight.

Thank you for following along with us, not just this evening but throughout the qualification campaign.

We hope to see you all again soon.

Congratulations to Poland and enjoy the Euros.

    Have a beer for Wales.

    Thank you and goodnight.

Former Wales midfielder Joe Allen speaking on Sgorio: [On Rob Page's future]

The two things you have to look for is, are the players supportive of the manager? That's very evident.

Does the future look bright and is the team improving and that is also evident.

He deserves the chance to carry on and the chance to prove himself again.

Wales manager Rob Page speaking on S4C:

"It's a cruel game, that's what I've said to the players, one kick away from qualifying. It hurts.

"I thought we were the better team, my message to the players at half-time was we are the better team, we will win this game.

"It's so disappointing but look how far we've come, there's something good happening with this group.

"We rallied around Daniel James, he had the bravery to take that penalty, I am so proud of that group."

On his future, he commented: "This team is going somewhere, they're so disappointed that they haven't qualified tonight. They're hungry for it, there's a lot more to come and plenty more good times ahead."

Wales captain Ben Davies speaking on Sgorio: It's a difficult one to take, we put everything into the game but in the end it wasn't to be.

I don't know what to say, it was a good performance but in the end the result is the most important thing and that went against us tonight.

Their a good team, there wasn't much between us tonight but in the end penalties it's cruel.

It's an emotional one right now, the character shown from the players showed everyone loves playing for Wales.

  6. Fans 'gutted' for Jamespublished at 22:47 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

FT: Wales 0-0 Poland (Poland win 5-4 on penalties)

Devastated fans are taking to social media after narrowly missing out on a place in the Euros.

Commentator and former Wales striker Nathan Blake said he hoped online trolls would leave Dan James alone, after his penalty shot was saved.

But many took to X (formerly Twitter) to give him their support.

"Absolutely gutted for Dan James," said one Welsh fan, just minutes after the game ended in heartbreak for Wales.

"You done us proud boys," added another. "Dan James too".

There are a lot of young boys out there that will be heartbroken but there's many more opportunities to come, the likes of Jordan James, Dan James, Ethan Ampadu, Harry Wilson, David Brooks.

So many players who have gained so much experience and tonight will go to add to that, there is an exciting future for that group of players in my opinion.

He's one of the main reasons we went to the World Cup and the Euros before that, everyone will support him and will remember what he's done for Wales not just a penalty miss.

I think a lot of credit has to go to Rob Page and his staff to put Wales in this position, on the brink of qualification.

We were so close to another Euros, the fans will be absolutely gutted, but look at this, the fans are showing their appreciation.

That sums up a team in transition they are not going to be consistent, they didn't do too much wrong but they didn't quite make it count when it happened.

The team played ok without playing well, it's so hard to take, my head is all over the place with the emotion of it all.

Dan James has come on sub, played out of position and did really well, tonight it has just come down the last penalty.

Credit to the lads they weren't able to just get over that line.

We know they are in transition but they have made a country proud, they've given a hell of a run, a hell of a go but proud, that's how I feel right now.

Wales will be disappointed they didn't win this game in 90 minutes, Wales weren't at their best and I'm sure when Rob Page looks back he'll see that.

It was such a high-pressure match and you can understand how the game can go away from you, both teams didn't want to make a mistake, you could see that.

Devastating, the players on the pitch have given their absolute everything and the reaction from the crowd suggests they are behind their team.

My heart breaks for Dan James, he's come up with so many moments for his country and just couldn't quite put that penalty away.
