Before heading over to Abu Dhabi, Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo took their Red Bull out for a spin on the streets of Dubai. That's probably the last time Vettel will have the chance to do donuts in that car before he heads over to Ferrari to embark on a new chapter in his career.

"If Jenson Button is not retained by McLaren next year there may only be one British driver on the grid next year. But this weekend there are three, after Caterham found the money to get to the final race and Will Stevens secured the second drive alongside Kamui Kobayashi.

"Stevens has paid about £500,000 to make his grand prix debut for a team struggling in the extreme and he admits: 'It's not the easiest situation but when you get the opportunity you have to grab it with both hands.' Caterham's administrator and acting team boss said the team needed to race here to convince potential purchasers they were worth buying.

"Stevens is hoping the team can make it to 2015: 'My backers are a small group of people who are in for this race and who wanted to be in F1 next year, so I'm in a pretty good position, I just need to go out there and do a good job'."

What's one of the first tasks a new driver has to complete? The obligatory photo-shoot. Britain's Will Stevens, 23, makes his debut this weekend after securing the vacant drive at the returning Caterham team.

We received some news on the condition of Jules Bianchi earlier this week, with his parents Philippe and Christine saying that the Frenchman is no long in an artificial coma and is breathing unaided after crashing heavily at last month's Japanese Grand Prix.

The 25-year-old has been flown from hospital in Yokkaichi to intensive care in Nice. However, his condition is still "critical" and he remains unconscious.

    Standings

In case you've not heard it enough in recent days, Lewis Hamilton leads Nico Rosberg by 17 points, with Daniel Ricciardo almost 100 points further behind, such has Mercedes' dominance been this season. Sebastian Vettel, the reigning world champion bound for Ferrari, is more than 50 points further adrift, with Fernando Alonso fifth.

"The announcement that Fernando Alonso is leaving Ferrari after this race and being replaced by Sebastian Vettel for next season has been expected for weeks and was finally made on the eve of this race.

"Amid the carefully staged press releases - one announcing Alonso's departure; followed half an hour or so later by one on Vettel's arrival - the predictable words, and the insistence that everyone was happy, there were one or two nuggets, the most interesting of which was Alonso's admission that he had been thinking about leaving Ferrari since 2013.

"This was not a surprise - it is well known he talked to Red Bull that summer - but to hear him admit it was fascinating, nonetheless. As for Alonso's future, although everyone now knows he will be at McLaren next year, he is still not allowed to admit it. He came close, though. 'It was not a surprise for anybody what we announced today,' Alonso said on Thursday, 'and soon it will not be a surprise for anybody where I will go'."

"And so it has come to this. After 18 races and one of the most intense title battles for years, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have reached the final hurdle. On Sunday evening, under the glittering lights of the Yas Marina circuit, one of them will be crowned world champion and the other will be heartbroken.

"Before that, though, there are preparations to be done and a race weekend to be got through. 'I come into the race weekend to try to win,' said Hamilton, trying to keep things as normal as possible, 'so nothing changes there. It's about setting the car up, preparing well'."
