Sebastian Vettel's 16th place in qualifying in Ferrari's worst effort in Montreal since Rubens Barrichello started 20th back in 2005 following a gearbox failure.

Hamilton's 44th career pole, for the man in car 44, comes just two days after he wore a baseball shirt bearing the name of Hank Aaron, who also made the number famous.
Aaron, who hit a career total of 755 home runs, wore the 44 shirt and hit 44 home runs in four separate seasons - 1957, 1963, 1966, 1969.
Hamilton was given the shirt by a fan who had obviously done his homework on the significance of the number...

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss, tells BBC Sport: "It was very close until the last two runs. Vettel not making it into Q2 was a bit of a surprise, but we're very happy, one and two is great.
"I think we got it slightly wrong with the tyres, we need to find out why, but still early to say. Lewis struggled a bit this morning and it wasn't perfect yesterday and it is important for him, its good for morale and good for the team.

Unsuprisingly it is the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen that takes third place on the grid. The Finn's time is over sixth tenths shy of Hamilton's pole, with Valtteri Bottas taking fourth.
The Lotuses of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado are next up, ahead of Force India's Nico Hulkenberg in seventh.
Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat is eighth ahead of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, with the second Force India of Sergio Perez 10th.

Romain Grosjean posts a 1:15.916 for Lotus. Very strong pace from the Lotus - just a couple of tenths off the Mercedes' best pace so far this weekend.
As I write that the Frenchman is knocked off top spot by the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, who now has a real chance this weekend to claw some points back on team-mate Sebastian Vettel.

"Canada has cast its spell again, and qualifying has not even started yet. An eventful final practice session saw Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton at either ends of the timing sheets.
"Hamilton had a very messy hour, not managing a representative lap on either type of tyre, making at least two more mistakes to add to the three on Friday. He has clearly not found his rhythm here yet and one can only speculate as to whether this is related to the disappointment of Monaco.
"Hamilton is on the back foot going into qualifying, of that there is no doubt. Can he turn it around on a circuit where he has always been strong, but where last year he lost pole to Rosberg by, yes, an error?"

Bad news to report for Jenson Button fans I'm afraid.
If you were with us earlier you'll know the Briton's McLaren suffered a failure late in FP3 that saw him slow to a halt after turn seven.
McLaren have now tweeted: "Button's car suffered ERS-related failure towards the end of FP3. Our engineers are looking at data, but sadly his car won't be ready for quali."

It would, of course, be folly to read too much into the night-and-day gap between the Mercedes drivers in the final practice session.
A gap of 5.8 seconds between Nico Rosberg in first and Lewis Hamilton in 20th is obviously massive, but down only to circumstance, with Hamilton failing to get a clean lap in the gap between two red-flag periods.
Hamilton's fastest lap time was set on the soft tyre after he had to miss the final chicane because he misjudged the entry. Up to that point, he had been about 0.1secs off Rosberg's pace.
And then there are the Ferraris, with their improved engines, to factor in.
This qualifying session could be interesting.

An odd session that.
The red flags fell badly for Lewis Hamilton and he is unable to put together a complete quick lap. He ends up 20th and last, but read nothing into that.
Conversely, his team-mate Nico Rosberg did find a window in among the red flags to set a lap on the super-soft tyres, and his time of 1:15.660 will boost his confidence heading into qualifying at 18:00 BST.

Watching a replay of that incident, it looks like Nasr's DRS opened a fraction of a second before he started weaving to get heat into his tyres.
Possibly a contributing factor to the accident but a big error all the same.

He's made a real mess of his car and there's debris all over the track. The Brazilian is out of his car and seems OK. He's off for a check over at the medical facility.
This will take a long time to clear up. Maybe even session over.

Like yesterday, the lads at Mercedes are pushing the boundaries on a very 'green' track.
Within a few seconds of each other, Lewis Hamilton locks his right front into the hairpin while Nico Rosberg misses the apex at turn six.
Rosberg goes fastest
The track is starting to come to the drivers now and we have a first lap of the day in the 1:16s.
Nico Rosberg is the man atop the pile, a 1:16.783 putting him around three tenths clear of both Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa, the Williams boys already looking much better than they did in Monaco.

Former motorsport boss Max Mosley says Formula 1 "needs fixing" as the sport continues to wrestle with decisions over its future direction, writes Andrew Benson.
Mosley, president of governing body the FIA from 1993 to 2009, said that "there are clearly things wrong".
"Four of the teams haven't got enough money and other teams have so much money they waste a lot of it," he said.
Mosley said the governance structure that cuts small teams out of decision making was "completely wrong".

Ten minutes gone
Around a dozen cars have set times now but there's not much to read into them at this stage.
Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen leads the way at present with a 1:17.681 on the soft tyre, nearly two seconds off yesterday's benchmark time in the dry set by Lewis Hamilton on the super-soft.

After Mercedes' strategic error under the safety car Monaco, we're taking a chance to look back on famous moments when pit stops have gone wrong.
David Coulthard's slide into the wall when entering the pits while leading at Adelaide in 1995 is one famous example, but what others stand out for you? There's plenty to choose from.

"Jenson Button had a difficult day in the McLaren on Friday. Delayed by a gearbox problem in the first session, he was half a second slower than team-mate Fernando Alonso in the second, and BBC F1 analyst Allan McNish said Button looked tentative on turn-in for the chicanes and was losing time there.
"'We have a lot of work to do on the set-up,' he admitted, while Alonso said he was 'happy with the balance' - and looked it as he attacked the last chicane.
"Button said he thought 'top 10 will be difficult', and Alonso said he was expecting 'about P12 or P13 in qualifying'.

"On the plus side, Honda has brought engine upgrades here, using up two of their nine available in-season development tokens. On Thursday, the drivers said these were for reliability and efficiency and although Honda F1 boss Yasuhisa Arai said after Friday practice that he 'had a very good feeling and we're positive not just for this race but also the next race and the one after that'.
"But on Saturday morning he admitted to this writer that there was 'not so much' extra performance. And the speed trap times revealed the McLarens right at the bottom, ahead only of one Manor."
Ricciardo off at turn one
All that rain yesterday washed away what rubber had been added to the track in FP1, and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo has just demonstrated the upshot of that.
The Australian runs out of grip into the first turn and takes briefly to the grass before continuing.
"One of the surprises of Friday was the pace of the Lotus cars, right up there behind the Mercedes and Ferraris as the third fastest team in both sessions, mixing it with Williams and Red Bull. The team have no special updates for this race, other than the usual low-downforce package required for this track and trackside operations director Alan Permane admitted the performance of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado had been a bit of a surprise.
"'We're a bit more competitive than I expected,' he said. 'We're on a very normal programme, too. Let's wait until 3pm on Saturday before getting too excited, though.'"

Final practice is under way.
Pastor Maldonado is the first man out. The Lotus cars have looked good this weekend and they have realistic expectations of both getting into the top 10 come qualifying later today.
"Ferrari's pace on the race-simulation runs before the rain hit in Friday practice was hot. Almost too hot, one suspects, for it to be real. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, running one type of tyre each, were both about a second a lap quicker than the Mercedes drivers. Far too much to have been explained by a 15bhp engine upgrade.
"The suspicion is that they must have been lighter on fuel than the silver cars. Ferrari technical director James Allison said that the weather had 'mucked things up', making the session 'hard to judge'. But he is clearly not expecting an all-red front row. Sitting next to Paddy Lowe, his opposite number at Mercedes, in the official news conference, Allison said: 'We think we went quite well but we also think these guys are probably hiding their light under a bushel.'"
"A truncated and rain-affected day of practice on Friday has set a delicious tone for the Canadian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton looked fast but had the sort of edgy, incident-packed day that suggested the disappointment of Monaco might still be preying on his mind, no matter how much he says it is not.
"And Ferrari, with an upgraded engine, look close enough to give Mercedes at least pause for thought.
"With Friday's rain a distant memory, an enticing day of the sort of action the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve seems to guarantee is in prospect."

Unlikely to see Alonso in FP3. Routine check last night by Honda found a race ending issue - new engine being put in.
"Toro Rosso have decided to change Max Verstappen's internal combustion engine. That will be his fifth this year, adding a 10-place grid penalty to the five he already has for crashing into Romain Grosjean in Monaco.
"If he does not qualify in the top five, the remainder of the penalty will be added on at the next race, according to the structure of the FIA's penalty system."

McLaren on Twitter: A routine inspection has revealed issues with Alonso's engine. Therefore, we are replacing his engine now.
"Fernando Alonso's weekend has taken an unfortunate turn overnight. When Honda did its routine check on his engine last night, it found a problem that would have meant he did not finish the race.
"The team did not want to break the curfew for the second time - and incur a penalty - so they have delayed changing it until this morning. Which means they are up against it to get Alonso out in final practice. That's a blow for driver and team - Alonso was substantially quicker than team-mate Jenson Button here on Friday.
"Assuming the engine is new - as racing director Eric Boullier described it - that is Alonso's fourth this season. If he needs another at any point, that is an automatic grid penalty. McLaren already know this is inevitable for both drivers."

Hello and welcome along to live text commentary of this afternoon's final practice and qualifying sessions for the Canadian Grand Prix.
Apparently there's a football match going on tonight but we're not interested in any of that nonsense.
You and I know there's only one major global sporting event going on this weekend, and it involves 20 cars hooning around the wonderful Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on the Ile Notre-Dame.
Third practice and qualifying are coming up, but there's already plenty of news coming out of the paddock.
We'll start down at McLaren, where gremlins have struck again...

No doubts over which driver took centre stage during yesterday's opening two practice sessions.
Not only did Lewis Hamilton go quickest in both, the Mercedes man also had a spin at the hairpin, locked his brakes on more than one occasion and vaulted over some hefty kerbs, and capped it all by aquaplaning off in heavy rain in the second session.
Quite the day for the world champion. Wonder what he has in store today?

Sebastian Vettel's 16th place in qualifying in Ferrari's worst effort in Montreal since Rubens Barrichello started 20th back in 2005 following a gearbox failure.
On that occasion, the scarlet car came flying through the pack to finish in third place.

Lewis Hamilton takes pole 44 after Aaron tribute
Hamilton's 44th career pole, for the man in car 44, comes just two days after he wore a baseball shirt bearing the name of Hank Aaron, who also made the number famous.
Aaron, who hit a career total of 755 home runs, wore the 44 shirt and hit 44 home runs in four separate seasons - 1957, 1963, 1966, 1969.
Hamilton was given the shirt by a fan who had obviously done his homework on the significance of the number...

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss, tells BBC Sport: "It was very close until the last two runs. Vettel not making it into Q2 was a bit of a surprise, but we're very happy, one and two is great.
"I think we got it slightly wrong with the tyres, we need to find out why, but still early to say. Lewis struggled a bit this morning and it wasn't perfect yesterday and it is important for him, its good for morale and good for the team.
"Ferrari has been looking very strong. So far for us it is good that there is just one red car."

Unsuprisingly it is the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen that takes third place on the grid. The Finn's time is over sixth tenths shy of Hamilton's pole, with Valtteri Bottas taking fourth.
The Lotuses of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado are next up, ahead of Force India's Nico Hulkenberg in seventh.
Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat is eighth ahead of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, with the second Force India of Sergio Perez 10th.

A 1:14.8 is no good to Nico Rosberg and he cannot usurp team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who also fails to improve on his final lap.

This is not what was expected today.
An improved engine and strong performances at every round this season had Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel among the favourites to win this weekend.
No one, but no one, saw a Q1 elimination coming.
Grosjean impresses again
Romain Grosjean posts a 1:15.916 for Lotus. Very strong pace from the Lotus - just a couple of tenths off the Mercedes' best pace so far this weekend.
As I write that the Frenchman is knocked off top spot by the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, who now has a real chance this weekend to claw some points back on team-mate Sebastian Vettel.

"McLaren have had a very difficult 24 hours. Arriving here with an upgraded engine, aimed at improving reliability and efficiency, Fernando Alonso's developed a problem on Friday and needed to be changed on Saturday morning, meaning he managed only one lap in final practice.
"Jenson Button, half a second off his team-mate and struggling on Friday, had had a smoother run, reliability-wise, until the last 10 minutes of final practice, when his car ground to a halt coming out of Turn Seven. It was a hybrid failure, which required an engine change, and Button will take no part in qualifying as a result.

"Canada has cast its spell again, and qualifying has not even started yet. An eventful final practice session saw Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton at either ends of the timing sheets.
"Hamilton had a very messy hour, not managing a representative lap on either type of tyre, making at least two more mistakes to add to the three on Friday. He has clearly not found his rhythm here yet and one can only speculate as to whether this is related to the disappointment of Monaco.
"Hamilton is on the back foot going into qualifying, of that there is no doubt. Can he turn it around on a circuit where he has always been strong, but where last year he lost pole to Rosberg by, yes, an error?"
Button out of qualifying
Bad news to report for Jenson Button fans I'm afraid.
If you were with us earlier you'll know the Briton's McLaren suffered a failure late in FP3 that saw him slow to a halt after turn seven.
McLaren have now tweeted: "Button's car suffered ERS-related failure towards the end of FP3. Our engineers are looking at data, but sadly his car won't be ready for quali."
Meanwhile, in the pit lane...
I offer this image with no comment.
But don't count Hamilton out
It would, of course, be folly to read too much into the night-and-day gap between the Mercedes drivers in the final practice session.
A gap of 5.8 seconds between Nico Rosberg in first and Lewis Hamilton in 20th is obviously massive, but down only to circumstance, with Hamilton failing to get a clean lap in the gap between two red-flag periods.
Hamilton's fastest lap time was set on the soft tyre after he had to miss the final chicane because he misjudged the entry. Up to that point, he had been about 0.1secs off Rosberg's pace.
And then there are the Ferraris, with their improved engines, to factor in.
This qualifying session could be interesting.

Mercedes first... and last
An odd session that.
The red flags fell badly for Lewis Hamilton and he is unable to put together a complete quick lap. He ends up 20th and last, but read nothing into that.
Conversely, his team-mate Nico Rosberg did find a window in among the red flags to set a lap on the super-soft tyres, and his time of 1:15.660 will boost his confidence heading into qualifying at 18:00 BST.

Button stops on track
Just as McLaren fix one problem, another crawls menacingly into view.
This time Jenson Button is the recipient of lady luck's wrath, his car grinding to a halt on the exit of turn seven.
"I had a massive loss of power. We've got a bigger problem here," the Briton says on the radio.

Super-soft run sees Rosberg improve
Nico Rosberg sets the fastest time of the weekend so far with a super-soft aided 1:15.660.
Alonso goes out
Good news for Fernando Alonso. McLaren have completed his engine change and out he goes.
Green light
I did a major disservice to the marshals. They've cleaned that mess up in double-quick time and we're green again.
The drivers have around 12 minutes of track time left.

More on Nasr's accident
Watching a replay of that incident, it looks like Nasr's DRS opened a fraction of a second before he started weaving to get heat into his tyres.
Possibly a contributing factor to the accident but a big error all the same.

Felipe Nasr: "I had a big shunt. The tyres were way too cold."
Nasr weaves himself into the wall
Oh dearie dearie me, Felipe Nasr.
Weaving to get heat into his tyres on the long run down to the final turn, the Sauber rookie overcooks it and launches the car into the wall.
He's made a real mess of his car and there's debris all over the track. The Brazilian is out of his car and seems OK. He's off for a check over at the medical facility.
This will take a long time to clear up. Maybe even session over.

"One of the hot rumours in F1 for the past couple of weeks or so has been that Renault are about to buy back the Lotus team and become team owners again. Two weeks ago in Monaco, I wrote here that one source had said he thought the deal might already have been done.
"This is what Lotus CEO Matthew Carter said on the subject on Friday, from which you can draw your own conclusions: 'I continue to say the same thing. The shareholders have told me that the company isn't for sale. I think I've said in the press before that everything is sale for a certain price. That's as much as I can say. I continue to reiterate that we signed a long-term contract with Mercedes Benz (as engine supplier) and as far as we're concerned we just continue down that route. That last information I heard was that we were going to be sold by the end of May but we're still here and we're still the same team.'"

Mercedes boys getting ragged again
Like yesterday, the lads at Mercedes are pushing the boundaries on a very 'green' track.
Within a few seconds of each other, Lewis Hamilton locks his right front into the hairpin while Nico Rosberg misses the apex at turn six.
Rosberg goes fastest
The track is starting to come to the drivers now and we have a first lap of the day in the 1:16s.
Nico Rosberg is the man atop the pile, a 1:16.783 putting him around three tenths clear of both Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa, the Williams boys already looking much better than they did in Monaco.
Mosley wants radical changes
Former motorsport boss Max Mosley says Formula 1 "needs fixing" as the sport continues to wrestle with decisions over its future direction, writes Andrew Benson.
Mosley, president of governing body the FIA from 1993 to 2009, said that "there are clearly things wrong".
"Four of the teams haven't got enough money and other teams have so much money they waste a lot of it," he said.
Mosley said the governance structure that cuts small teams out of decision making was "completely wrong".

"Apologies, I was incorrect on what happens to Max Verstappen if he cannot serve his full 15-place grid drop. It does not get carried over to the next race, there is a sliding scale of time/stop-and-go penalties during the race depending on how many places he cannot serve."
Ten minutes gone
Around a dozen cars have set times now but there's not much to read into them at this stage.
Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen leads the way at present with a 1:17.681 on the soft tyre, nearly two seconds off yesterday's benchmark time in the dry set by Lewis Hamilton on the super-soft.

Button looking for better

"Jenson Button had a difficult day in the McLaren on Friday. Delayed by a gearbox problem in the first session, he was half a second slower than team-mate Fernando Alonso in the second, and BBC F1 analyst Allan McNish said Button looked tentative on turn-in for the chicanes and was losing time there.
"'We have a lot of work to do on the set-up,' he admitted, while Alonso said he was 'happy with the balance' - and looked it as he attacked the last chicane.
"Button said he thought 'top 10 will be difficult', and Alonso said he was expecting 'about P12 or P13 in qualifying'.
"On the plus side, Honda has brought engine upgrades here, using up two of their nine available in-season development tokens. On Thursday, the drivers said these were for reliability and efficiency and although Honda F1 boss Yasuhisa Arai said after Friday practice that he 'had a very good feeling and we're positive not just for this race but also the next race and the one after that'.
"But on Saturday morning he admitted to this writer that there was 'not so much' extra performance. And the speed trap times revealed the McLarens right at the bottom, ahead only of one Manor."
Ricciardo off at turn one
All that rain yesterday washed away what rubber had been added to the track in FP1, and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo has just demonstrated the upshot of that.
The Australian runs out of grip into the first turn and takes briefly to the grass before continuing.
Lotus doing better than expected

"One of the surprises of Friday was the pace of the Lotus cars, right up there behind the Mercedes and Ferraris as the third fastest team in both sessions, mixing it with Williams and Red Bull. The team have no special updates for this race, other than the usual low-downforce package required for this track and trackside operations director Alan Permane admitted the performance of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado had been a bit of a surprise.
"'We're a bit more competitive than I expected,' he said. 'We're on a very normal programme, too. Let's wait until 3pm on Saturday before getting too excited, though.'"
Green light
Final practice is under way.
Pastor Maldonado is the first man out. The Lotus cars have looked good this weekend and they have realistic expectations of both getting into the top 10 come qualifying later today.
Mercedes 'hiding their light under a bushel'

"Ferrari's pace on the race-simulation runs before the rain hit in Friday practice was hot. Almost too hot, one suspects, for it to be real. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, running one type of tyre each, were both about a second a lap quicker than the Mercedes drivers. Far too much to have been explained by a 15bhp engine upgrade.
"The suspicion is that they must have been lighter on fuel than the silver cars. Ferrari technical director James Allison said that the weather had 'mucked things up', making the session 'hard to judge'. But he is clearly not expecting an all-red front row. Sitting next to Paddy Lowe, his opposite number at Mercedes, in the official news conference, Allison said: 'We think we went quite well but we also think these guys are probably hiding their light under a bushel.'"

'Delicious' day in store

"A truncated and rain-affected day of practice on Friday has set a delicious tone for the Canadian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton looked fast but had the sort of edgy, incident-packed day that suggested the disappointment of Monaco might still be preying on his mind, no matter how much he says it is not.
"And Ferrari, with an upgraded engine, look close enough to give Mercedes at least pause for thought.
"With Friday's rain a distant memory, an enticing day of the sort of action the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve seems to guarantee is in prospect."

Verstappen set for 15-place grid penalty

"Toro Rosso have decided to change Max Verstappen's internal combustion engine. That will be his fifth this year, adding a 10-place grid penalty to the five he already has for crashing into Romain Grosjean in Monaco.
"If he does not qualify in the top five, the remainder of the penalty will be added on at the next race, according to the structure of the FIA's penalty system."

McLaren on Twitter: A routine inspection has revealed issues with Alonso's engine. Therefore, we are replacing his engine now.
Engine change for Alonso

"Fernando Alonso's weekend has taken an unfortunate turn overnight. When Honda did its routine check on his engine last night, it found a problem that would have meant he did not finish the race.
"The team did not want to break the curfew for the second time - and incur a penalty - so they have delayed changing it until this morning. Which means they are up against it to get Alonso out in final practice. That's a blow for driver and team - Alonso was substantially quicker than team-mate Jenson Button here on Friday.
"Assuming the engine is new - as racing director Eric Boullier described it - that is Alonso's fourth this season. If he needs another at any point, that is an automatic grid penalty. McLaren already know this is inevitable for both drivers."

Hello and welcome along to live text commentary of this afternoon's final practice and qualifying sessions for the Canadian Grand Prix.
Apparently there's a football match going on tonight but we're not interested in any of that nonsense.
You and I know there's only one major global sporting event going on this weekend, and it involves 20 cars hooning around the wonderful Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on the Ile Notre-Dame.
Third practice and qualifying are coming up, but there's already plenty of news coming out of the paddock.
We'll start down at McLaren, where gremlins have struck again...
All eyes on one man
No doubts over which driver took centre stage during yesterday's opening two practice sessions.
Not only did Lewis Hamilton go quickest in both, the Mercedes man also had a spin at the hairpin, locked his brakes on more than one occasion and vaulted over some hefty kerbs, and capped it all by aquaplaning off in heavy rain in the second session.
Quite the day for the world champion. Wonder what he has in store today?
