Sebastian Vettel's 16th place in qualifying in Ferrari's worst effort in Montreal since Rubens Barrichello started 20th back in 2005 following a gearbox failure.

Adeel Ejaz: What are the odds of a Lotus tomorrow causing a safety car on turn 1 of first lap?!

Trugster: Just remember Lewis, you had pole in Monaco too...

Hamilton's 44th career pole, for the man in car 44, comes just two days after he wore a baseball shirt bearing the name of Hank Aaron, who also made the number famous.

Aaron, who hit a career total of 755 home runs, wore the 44 shirt and hit 44 home runs in four separate seasons - 1957, 1963, 1966, 1969.

Hamilton was given the shirt by a fan who had obviously done his homework on the significance of the number...

Jonathan Hutchinson: I have a feeling we're in for a cracking Canadian GP! Good to see Kimi make the top 3.... I feel a tasty battle coming up.

Chris Brown: Most fascinating grid of the season given the mix of cars out of position? Canada always throws up some fun.

Jack of all trades: Montreal like Monaco always brings safety cars, hope it doesn't ruin it. I expect Kimi to be quick in the race.

  12. Wolff: 'We're very happy'published at 19:13 British Summer Time 6 June 2015

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss, tells BBC Sport: "It was very close until the last two runs. Vettel not making it into Q2 was a bit of a surprise, but we're very happy, one and two is great.

"I think we got it slightly wrong with the tyres, we need to find out why, but still early to say. Lewis struggled a bit this morning and it wasn't perfect yesterday and it is important for him, its good for morale and good for the team.

"Ferrari has been looking very strong. So far for us it is good that there is just one red car."

  15. Raikkonen best of the restpublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 6 June 2015

Unsuprisingly it is the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen that takes third place on the grid. The Finn's time is over sixth tenths shy of Hamilton's pole, with Valtteri Bottas taking fourth.

The Lotuses of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado are next up, ahead of Force India's Nico Hulkenberg in seventh.

Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat is eighth ahead of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, with the second Force India of Sergio Perez 10th.

  17. No improvements on final runspublished at 19:03 British Summer Time 6 June 2015

    It's a two-car shoot-out for pole but in the end it's a no-contest

A 1:14.8 is no good to Nico Rosberg and he cannot usurp team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who also fails to improve on his final lap.

Hamilton's earlier time of 1:14.393 gives Hamilton a 44th career pole - and fourth at this circuit.
