This is not what was expected today.
An improved engine and strong performances at every round this season had Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel among the favourites to win this weekend.
No one, but no one, saw a Q1 elimination coming.
Romain Grosjean posts a 1:15.916 for Lotus. Very strong pace from the Lotus - just a couple of tenths off the Mercedes' best pace so far this weekend.
As I write that the Frenchman is knocked off top spot by the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, who now has a real chance this weekend to claw some points back on team-mate Sebastian Vettel.
Jonathan Hutchinson: Massa & Vettel out in Q1!! Going to make tomorrow's race even more interesting!!
Danny la Fiesta: Tomorrow's shaping up for an amazing race with Vettel and Massa at the back. Bring on Q2.
Shohidur Rahman: That's why I love the Canadian GP. Always the most eventful race of the year.
Q2 is under way.
Button, Massa and Vettel already out.
What happens next?
With all eyes on the battle to avoid being eliminated from qualifying, the fact a Lotus went fastest in Q1 was rather overlooked.
Well done Romain Grosjean. The Lotus is really looking strong round here.
Ben Edwards
BBC F1 commentator
"The man who is third in the championship and was looking to give Mercedes a really hard time this weekend, qualifies all the way down in 16th. Reliability is usually one of the strengths of Ferrari, but something has definitely gone wrong here."
OUT:
16 Vettel, 17 Massa, 18 Merhi, 19 Stevens, 20 Button
IN:
1 Grosjean, 2 Rosberg, 3 Hamilton, 4 Maldonado, 5 Hulkenberg, 6 Raikkonen, 7 Verstappen, 8 Ricciardo, 9 Kvyat, 10 Bottas, 11 Sainz, 12 Ericsson, 13 Perez, 14 Nasr, 15 Alonso
Felipe Massa: "No power, no power! Unbelievable."
Here comes the Ferrari driver towards the line - incredibly it's a shootout between him and fellow world champion Fernando Alonso to avoid falling out in Q1 - but he can't do it!
Sebastian Vettel is 16th and eliminated!
Amazing.
Felipe Massa has been eliminated in Q1 after complaining of no power in the Williams.
Vettel is also eliminated as it stands but he JUST got across the line for a final lap before the chequered flag came out.
Another session, another scare for Lewis Hamilton, this time bouncing over the kerbs at the final turn.
Pressure very much on the German to get a clean lap in with just two minutes left.
Special mention to the Sauber mechanics, who have worked wonders to rebuild Felipe Nasr's car a crash in FP3 that left the rookie's motor looking decidedly second-hand.
Mercedes on Twitter:, external How close can you get?! Rosberg now goes P1 with a 1:15.893 - just 2 thousandths clear of Hamilton!
OK, we're getting to the business end of this session with just five minutes left.
With Jenson Button already out, the men in danger are Felipe Massa, Will Stevens, Roberto Merhi and Sebastian Vettel, who has still not set a lap in the Ferrari after that early problem.
The Lotus man has lost it through the first turn, which I think I'm right in saying is the first time he's got it wrong this weekend.
So there will be no cheap gags being made by me.
Sebastian Vettel: "OK, there's something wrong." Team: "We have a problem with the MGUH. Box."
A wonderfully lurid moment through the final turn by Fernando Alonso there, the lone McLaren wiggling over the kerbs by the Wall of Champions.
