"Star performer in qualifying? Apart from the pole man, it had to be a toss-up between Force India's Nico Hulkenberg and Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen in fifth and seventh places. The German is still riding the wave of euphoria that came with winning on his Le Mans debut last weekend and was quick whether in the wet or dry, and well clear of team-mate Sergio Perez all weekend.

"Verstappen, meanwhile, was spectacular in the rain in first qualifying, consistently setting fastest times and ending up fourth. To be the fastest of the four Red Bull drivers in a very tricky session was a great achievement. Team-mate Carlos Sainz, who has been just as impressive this season, was even faster in the wet in Q1, but his decision to choose a set-up tilted at the possibility of a wet race left him 0.8secs off Verstappen in Q2. 'I hope it rains on Sunday,' the Spaniard said, 'because if not it will be a very complicated race due to the downforce level we've chosen.'"

Do you have your old man to thank for getting you into F1?

Ben Ashcroft: Certainly do, spent most Sundays of my childhood sat watching "those red cars" on the TV.

Lewis Duncan: Thanks to him putting his model cars and bikes in my room when I was little, I became a motorsport fan.

Emma: Been watching F1 with my Dad since I was small, 25+ years on we're still going to Goodwood & Silverstone together.

  6. Father's Day: The De Villotas' battle to make it in F1published at 12:37 British Summer Time 21 June 2015

Spain's Emilio de Villota battled gamely to carve out an F1 career in the late 1970s and early 80s, but could never quite land a competitive drive.

Between 1976 and 1982 he entered 15 grands prix, qualifying just twice - in Spain and Austria in 1977.

Daughter Maria raced in numerous series including Spanish F3 and Formula Palmer Audi before eventually earning an F1 test for Renault in 2011.

In 2012 she joined Marussia as a test driver but would suffer serious head injuries in an outing at Duxford Aerodrome in July of that same year. She sadly died in October 2013 as a consequence of the neurological injuries she suffered in that crash.

"I was listening to 'Help' by the Beatles before qualifying. I need help, they are too quick."

Those are the words of Sebastian Vettel in the Sun on Sunday's lead Formula 1 article.

"Generally the Mercedes powered cars can turn up the performance," he added.

  9. McLaren set for long afternoonpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 21 June 2015

"Much as at the last race in Montreal, Austria has been a tale of woe for McLaren, with reliability problems - both before this race and at it - leading to 25-place grid penalties for both Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. Yes, you read that right, 25 places. Austria is not a good track for a car that has a strong chassis but a weak engine and Alonso and Button took 15th and 17th, which means a back of the grid start and an early drive-through for the Spaniard and a 10-second stop-and-go for Button.

"But Alonso, who has generally been a picture of positivity all year, retained his bright outlook, saying that the new short nose-based aerodynamic upgrade had worked.

"'The car felt more competitive this weekend in the corners,' the two-time champion said, 'but unfortunately it is a very high power-effect circuit so we cannot maximise the new aero package but we are moving in the right direction so it is so far very positive.

"Alonso and McLaren very much see the race as an attempt to gather data on the car in their bid to have a more competitive second half of the season."

  10. Father's Day: A brace of flying Dutchmenpublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 21 June 2015

The newest father-son F1 driver dynasty is provided by the Verstappens, with young Max currently carving out quite a reputation for himself at Toro Rosso.

The 17-year-old became the sport's youngest ever driver when he made his debut in March and went on to break the record for the youngest ever driver to score points by more than two years when he finished seventh in Malaysia.

Dad Jos made his F1 debut with Benetton in 1994 and went on to contest 106 races through to the end of the 2003 season.

He finished on the podium twice, back-to-back third places in Hungary and Belgium in his debut season, but would score just seven additional points over the next seven years.

The Benare: Rosberg is fast so Vettel will struggle to get past. Race ends with the top 3 as it started.

Andrew Priestley: Nico is going to throw himself up the inside of Lewis' car into turn one given half the chance. He'll be sore after yesterday's spin.

Nick Bennetts: There hasn't been a great race so far this year. Rain today might make this one great.

  12. A word of warningpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 21 June 2015

I need to declare here that I watched Rush last night, which I'm sure you don't need me to tell you tells the awesome tale (with a few artistic liberties taken) of the 1976 world title battle between James Hunt and Niki Lauda.

So basically what I'm saying is that if today's race doesn't throw up a shed load of canoodling, fist fights, swearing and crashes, I'm going to be hugely disappointed and grumpy.

The Mail on Sunday's Jonathan McEvoy does not have many nice things to say about Formula 1 this morning.

In reference to the two 25-place grid penalties handed to Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso he writes: "The FIA handed out a sheet explaining the decision in language that went beyond jargon into impenetrable technical gobbledegook.

"It could not have been more inaccessible if it had been written in Ionic Greek. This reinforces the notion that Formula 1 is disappearing up its own exhaust pipe."

  16. 'I thought we were closer'published at 12:18 British Summer Time 21 June 2015

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer

"Ferrari had looked to be pretty much a match for Mercedes through Friday practice but, as is so often the case, come qualifying Mercedes stretched their legs and were just out of reach. How did Sebastian Vettel feel about the expectation that he might split the Mercedes coming to nothing? He answered with a rude word, before saying: "I thought so too. I thought we were closer, but the gap to Williams and Force India was smaller than it was in practice and the gap to Mercedes was bigger. We know they turn their engine up for qually, which doesn't help. But I am happy with third.'

    Sebastian VettelImage source, EPA

"As for his chances in the race, Vettel said: 'Usually from Saturday to Sunday we seem to be able to come the gap a bit. Hopefully the same thing happens and the race pace is good. The two left-handers in the second section are quite tricky, you need to be happy with the car around here, and I am. Hopefully we can put some pressure on them.'

"Vettel's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was a very unhappy man after what he said was a team communication mix-up meant he ended up 18th and knocked out in Q1. The various penalties mean the Finn starts 14th."
