Felipe Massa suffered a heavy crash in first practice, losing control under braking into Turn One.

He said straight afterwards that he lost control as soon as he closed the DRS overtaking aid; Williams have now confirmed there was a problem with the DRS closing. As in, it didn’t.

The car will be repaired in time for him to run in P2.

Not everyone had a smooth running around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Felipe Massa span off at the first corner, causing a red flag, and signalling the end of his participation in this practice session.

In case you missed first practice, Lewis Hamilton finished fastest ahead of Nico Rosberg.

The world champion was 0.331 seconds quicker than his Mercedes team-mate, despite using a slower set of tyres than the German.

Rosberg was on the ultra-soft tyre with Hamilton and Vettel on the super-soft.

If you have so much as a passing interest in football, you'll be well aware that there is a pretty big tournament about to start in France - Euro 2016.

It is the goings on in another French-speaking country that we here are interested in, however, as preparations for the Canadian Grand Prix - the seventh race of the season - continue in just under 30 minutes.

Hamilton, who won his first race of the season in Monaco last-time out, was fastest in first practice after rattling off a single, superb lap.

More of the same in FP2?

Excitement has been building all week within the French-speaking city, with fans donning their team's colours and crazy attire in anticipation of cheering their heroes on to glory.

Millions from all over the world will be following, while journalists from every corner of the globe have descended on the country.

    Now it is finally here.

That gap is a little over two hours, with the cars back out at 19:00 BST. For those of you back in the UK that's just enough time to finish work, get home, grab a bite to eat and settle in for a bit of F1 action.

We'll be back at 18:30 BST so for now I'll leave you with Andrew Benson's report from first practice.

"Lewis Hamilton has started this weekend where he ended it in Monaco. Absolutely on it and I think he has left Nico Rosberg with a lot to think about in the gap before FP2."

Just look at that. It's like something from wrestling when a wrestler makes his entrance to the ring.

    Big Daddy Button?

Whatever was wrong with Jenson Button's McLaren it appears to have been fixed. Woah! Maybe not as a huge plume of blue smoke spits out from the rear of his car as the engine is fired up.

He gets out onto the circuit but is cruising around quite slowly.

"It is like we are stuck in a temperature limiter," he reports. He's subsequently told to box.

Just a quick reminder that all the Renault-engined cars will have in Canada this weekend the upgraded engine that was available only Daniel Ricciardo and Kevin Magnussen in Monaco because its debut was brought forward.

The engine - which features a clever new pre-chamber-ignition combustion process that Mercedes are believed to have had since 2014 - is reputed to be 0.45secs quicker than the old one on a track like Montreal, so it is a very useful upgrade.
