There'll be smiles galore down at Red Bull after they laid down a marker to Mercedes in opening practice for the Singapore Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen topped the timesheet, with Daniel Ricciardo second quickest as Nico Rosberg crashed out and Lewis Hamilton finished fourth.

It would suggest Red Bull are primed to take the fight to Mercedes this weekend but, as ever, you can never write off the Silver Arrows...

Max Verstappen, in his last race weekend as an 18 year old, finishes quickest in first practice, pipping his Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo by five hundredths of a second.

Lewis Hamilton was fourth, 0.6s behind Verstappen but whereas the teenager set his time on ultrasofts, Hamilton's came on softs.

Would love to see F1 cars hammering it down the Bund but I'm not sure the rest of the city's streets would lend itself to a decent street circuit.

My gut instinct is there is a lot more to come from Mercedes but there is cause for optimism that Red Bull can give them something to think about this weekend. What we are again seeing here is an indication of how Red Bull have leapfrogged Ferrari.

Replays show Nico Rosberg locked up heading into the corner and hit the barrier pretty hard. Less than 10 minutes to go, so that'll be session over for him.

Nico Rosberg is back in the pits minus the front wing and with a puncture on his front left.

Crash for Nico Rosberg! He slams his Mercedes nose first into the barrier at Turn 18. He's OK and able to reverse and limp home.

Jenson Button is out on the circuit and has been for a while now after a problem early doors saw him come to a halt.

He is P16 with 1:49.615 and is not completely happy with how his McLaren is handling at the moment, saying second and third gear "feel very poor on the throttle".

It's a photographer's dream in Singapore now with the sun having set and the moon taking its place in the sky. As ever, it looks absolutely stunning. Only Hong Kong, for me, could rival Singapore for its beauty as a possible night race venue. Have always wanted to see an F1 race there.

Valtteri Bottas is competing in his first race weekend as a married man after tying the knot last weekend. The Finn and his bride had quite possibly the coolest chauffeur to the church on their wedding day - Mika Hakkinen.

He's currently 14th quickest in first practice.
