    Dodgy stomach, Seb?

Mercedes locked out the front row of the grid as Lewis Hamilton qualified second, with Sebastian Vettel lining up on the second row alongside Daniel Ricciardo.

Ferrari were nowhere near Mercedes in qualifying, with Vettel almost half a second off Hamilton.

The race, though, should be different.

Valtteri Bottas has been speaking about securing his first pole position during the drivers' parade.

He, unbelievably, is the first Finnish driver to secure pole since Heikki Kovalainen at the 2008 British Grand Prix.

"First pole is very special," said Bottas. "But now I'm thinking about the race. Today's the day that counts."

  5. Windy in Bahrainpublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 16 April 2017

After the intense heat of Friday and Saturday, race day is very different. It’s noticeably cooler, for a start - 27C, which is a good 10C less than Saturday. But more importantly a strong wind has picked up. Palm trees are swaying, flags flying horizontally, and sand is being blown about everywhere.

This will not only mean a headwind into Turn One, and a crosswind destabilising the cars in Turns Five-Six-Seven, 10 and 11, but also lots of sand on the track affecting grip. The winds are due to calm towards the evening, when the race starts, but are still expected to be gusting at up to 25-30mph.

There's less than 80 minutes to go until lights out and the drivers' parade is in full swing.

    Nice shorts, Max...

Whenever Lewis Hamilton was beaten to pole by Nico Rosberg, a grump could usually be relied on to follow. Not so on Saturday, when new team-mate Valtteri Bottas out-qualified him for the first time.

Hamilton was magnanimity personified, talking about what a great guy the Finn was (true), how much work he had put in (also true) and that he was an exceptional driver (absolutely definitive judgement still outstanding, but heading that way). Hamilton said he was not unhappy with his lap, apart from the second sector, where he dropped a couple of 10ths. Hamilton ducked a question about it on Saturday. A Mercedes spokesman said he’d had a snap out of Turn 10.

Hello! Welcome to our coverage of the Bahrain Grand Prix. It's Easter Sunday, but you won't be getting egg-based puns from me today.

It's usually at this point we natter about how awesome Lewis Hamilton was in qualifying after securing yet another pole position... but not this time. The Briton was beaten to it by his team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who put in a stonker of a lap to edge Hamilton to pole by just 0.023 seconds.

After a slightly uninspiring start to life at Mercedes, it was just the boost Bottas needed and, despite being denied the chance to close in on another Ayrton Senna record with a seventh successive pole position, Hamilton was a pretty good egg* about it all too...

    *Couldn't resist.

Hey, Valtteri, you got pole position, the first of your career! You must be ecstatic?

Finnish Formula 1 drivers rarely do emotion, but a win for Valtteri Bottas in today's Bahrain Grand Prix might just raise more than a smile...
