  1. Red Bull there or thereabouts?published at 15:12 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2017

Red Bull had a low-key start to testing, looking about a second or so off the pace in the first week. But from the start of play on Tuesday, Daniel Ricciardo was looking much better. On the soft tyres, he was right there with Ferrari and Mercedes. Unlike them, he also tried both the super-soft and ultra-soft, and was slower on the former and not much quicker on the latter.

“We learned something from that,” the Australian said, without elaborating. “In terms of where we were last week I feel that the car is starting to come alive more. At the moment there is no big secret or anything. We are not holding 2 seconds in our pocket, but we definitely feel that we can still get more out of the car.” So where did he think Red Bull were compared to the fastest?

“Not sure,” he said, “but we are there, thereabouts. Yeah, we are close enough.” Interesting.

I think I cursed Ferrari by putting a picture of Kimi Raikkonen in my opening entry. He was smiling, and Kimi smiling is a sure-fire sign of the coming of the apocalypse.

Kimi Raikkonen is out of the car and OK. His Ferrari is up close to the tyre wall but I can't quite tell if he's touched the barrier.

It's the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, which has gone off at Turn Three.

Busy afternoon programme for Fernando Alonso as Honda confirm he will be "gathering aero data, testing tyre compounds and mapping the power unit".

He's got two hours to do that in.

I'd like to think McLaren are going all Robocop on us and secretly rebuilding the car into some sort of unstoppable force for good. Wishful thinking?

  16. Long runs for Hamiltonpublished at 14:33 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2017

F1 journalist Dan Knutson in Barcelona:  Just as Valtteri Bottas did yesterday, Lewis Hamilton is doing long runs this afternoon. He is currently on an 18-lap stint using the Pirelli soft tyres.

  18. More problems for McLaren?published at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2017

Fernando Alonso has been in the pits for some time now and there has been no word on when he is coming out again other than the team saying it will be “this afternoon”.

Word on the street is that it’s some form of problem with the engine again but that the floor is going on again now. But a Honda spokeswoman denied this, saying: “There is nothing wrong today. We’ve got lots to get through after our limited running last week, so just busy changing things on the car. We're going through our run-plan as planned.”
