F1 journalist Dan Knutson: Nico Hulkenberg ended up fifth quickest in the morning session with a lap time of 1:21.213 and a total of 61 laps in the works Renault.

“A solid morning,” he said when the talked to the media during the lunch break. “We went through a lot of good test items, and a lot of set-up work, so it was one of the more productive mornings for sure.”

He tried the super soft Pirelli tyres for the first time.

“The feeling is okay,” he said. “The soft was a known quantity. The super softs are a little bit faster, but the gap is not as big as it was sometimes last year. Otherwise no major surprises there.”

Kayleigh: Been on the bus 40 minutes. Thank goodness #bbcf1, external is back from lunch. Still nowhere near getting off.

Three minutes into the afternoon and the only sound to be hard is the clattering of cutlery on plates. Some drivers are still polishing off the last of the buffets.

Chris Marsh: Someone in the office asked who would win in a foot race between the drivers? My thought is which team would win a 3 legged race!?

I reckon Pascal Wehrlein's height and lean physique means he'd take the rest over 100m.

Daniel Richards: Last season Ferrari were quick on harder tyres and not as competitive on softest tyres. Could they suffer same fate? Avoiding so far.

Pretty much everyone got Jenson Button and Daniel Ricciardo but Mike Flockhart was the first to get all three. The man in the middle is Austrian Harald Ertl, who competed in F1 from 1975-78.

  11. Tyre talkpublished at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2017

F1 journalist Dan Knutson in Barcelona:  In the first four days of testing the teams were getting used to the new Pirelli tyres, and Pirelli was seeing how its new tyres worked on the new cars. Now in test two it is time to speed things up.

“This test will be more focused on tyre performance,” Pirelli’s Mario Isola said. “The weather seems to be good – so more representative – it’s a bit warmer [than at the first test]. We are especially interested in understanding the level of degradation on the delta lap time – all the numbers that are useful.

“Also to give use some idea on the future choices. In a couple of days we have to announce the choices for the next three races, so it is important that we collect data to be sure that we have a good show and different strategies with the new regulations.”

Pirelli has already revealed what tyre compounds will be available up until the Russian Grand Prix, so the races in Spain, Monaco and Canada are the choices Isola is referring to.

I'm going to bob away for 10 minutes to grab a bite to eat but I'll leave you with these fine (and not so fine) examples of F1 facial hair. Can you name the three owners?

McLaren may have had a trouble-free morning but they finished it bottom of the timing sheet. That's far from where they will want to be, so plenty of work to do yet.

Only problem is, there's only two-and-a-half days of testing left...
