McLaren racing director Eric Boullier: "We just keep our head down and working hard and we will get there.

"It [Fernando Alonso's motivation] is as good as ever, even more I think. He believes in the project. Honda is working very hard to get us back to where we want to be."

Williams posted their 2016 financial results this week and they underlined the remarkable turnaround in the team’s fortunes off the track in the last few years. It is only two years since Williams posted a £42.5m loss. But this year the F1 team posted earnings before tax, depreciation and amortisation of £12.4m, up from £0.2m in 2015.

This improvement in the business is largely the work of chief executive officer Mike O’Driscoll, a former Jaguar executive who likes to keep a low profile but has done a superb job running the business side of the team in recent years.

There is other news, too. Deputy team principal Claire Williams has announced she is expecting a baby in October with partner Marc Harris.

Most drivers are staying in their cars, hopeful of getting the green light to head back out soon but, with 15 minutes left, that is looking increasingly unlikely.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner: "The problem is not so much here but at the hospital where it can't land.

"What have we learned? Max went out and got straight on it. We know he loves the wet, no major issues. That's about it really."

The session was red flagged with the timer on 23 minutes. As usual, the timer continues to countdown.

Will we get any more running?

    Oh dear.

The session is suspended again and once again it is because the medical helicopter cannot operate again because of low visibility.

Nico Hulkenberg climbs out of the yellow Renault and gets a lift of a similarly coloured scooter. The stewards have a bit of bother opening the gate to let him into the paddock, so Hulkenberg gets off the scooter and helps get it open.

Virtual safety car is deployed as Nico Hulkenberg beaches the Renault in the gravel at Turn 2. He just lost the rear as he took the corner.

He removes the steering wheel and a short session comes to an end for the German.

Nifty helmet he's wearing actually. Shiny red and white. Looks swish.

Another off for Kevin Magnussen on those inters. The Haas drivers are the only ones to have a bit of wobble since the session restarted.

Max Verstappen now sets the quickest time with 1:50.491. He's also on inters.

I would say the guys that have gone out on the full wets have done the right thing. There was some much aquaplaning in the past and Pirelli have developed this new tyre which passes a lot more water.

Lance Stroll gets the first time on the board with a 1:54.508. Far from anything competitive at the moment. The fastest time in P1 last year was 1:38.037.

Romain Grosjean does exactly the same as his team-mate, losing the back end of the Haas at Turn 9.

A pretty even split of intermediates and wet tyres being used at the moment.
