Chief F1 writer at SilverstoneThere was a bit of a thing on Thursday when the scrutineers did not like the look of the wheel tethers on Carlos Sainz’s Toro Rosso, because there was damaged tape covering them and the fibres were exposed.
There was concern this was unsafe and the car was not allowed to pass scrutineering. But the issue has been investigated and after the part was replaced no further action has been taken.

12:30 BST 14 July 2017Hello, we've had a driver change in the break while m'coll Mr Rose wends his way to Silverstone, so it'll be me guiding you through the delights of FP2.
I like to think it's a shared effort very much in the mould of the mighty Tony Brooks and Stirling Moss 60 years ago.
Yes, the more I think about it that's exactly what it's like.
Thirty minutes to FP2.

10:48 BST 14 July 2017Food for thought indeed.
There's definitely more to come from the Ferraris and also the Mercedes, with neither Lewis Hamilton or Valtteri Bottas giving the faster super-softs compounds a go.
Have a read of Andrew Benson's report here and join us again for second practice at 12:30 BST.
I'm being released from the live text commentary hot seat for the rest of the weekend so if you see a blond-haired chap wandering around Silverstone looking for people to talk to, that'll be me!
Maybe see you around.

BBC Radio 5 live commentatorIt looks like they are going two-by-two at the front. Two Mercedes and two Red Bulls and two Ferraris.
I don't think it will stay like this, my money is still on Lewis Hamilton, he is looking pretty comfortable out there but Valtteri Bottas is at least keeping him honest.

Neither of the Mercedes have given the super-softs ago, will they leave the compound be for this session? Just six minutes left to go.

Chief F1 writer at SilverstoneThere is an interesting - and cloudy - situation developing at Sauber. New team boss Frederic Vasseur - who starts work on Monday - has done his first media interview, with France’s L’Equipe newspaper, and said the team’s engine deal with Honda was “a project that’s on the table and will be the first I am going to work on”.
That sounds innocent enough until you read the next sentence: “It is necessary to deal with it rapidly. In view of what I understand of McLaren it can be scary.” Not exactly a vote of confidence. For the last couple of days rumours have been buzzing around - Sauber want to get out of the deal; Honda wants to get out of the deal; there is no actual contract signed yet; Honda wants to quit F1 altogether etc.
Clearly all is not well. It raises all sorts of possibilities - if Sauber and Honda don’t work together in 2018, the team need an engine. Ferrari is the obvious given their long relationship with Sauber. But Vasseur is close friends with Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff, whose protege Pascal Wehrlein drives for the team. So it’s not hard to imagine Vasseur seeing Mercedes as an attractive option - and that could spell bad news for McLaren, who hope to switch to Mercedes engines next year, because Mercedes can only supply one more team. And if McLaren don’t switch to Mercedes, what happens to Fernando Alonso? With no other obviously appealing options, it could push him into retirement from F1.
