The future of the British Grand Prix has been left uncertain after Silverstone's owner confirmed it had activated a break clause to cease hosting the race after 2019.

It became the event's permanent home in 1987 but that status has been in doubt several times over the years.

Dramatic clouds above Silverstone, but they look worse than they are. Weather forecasts suggest almost no chance of rain for either practice session today.

Max Verstappen, out now on super-softs, improves with 1:29.786 to go P3. That was on a lap when he had a twitchy moment as well. Red Bull appear to have the pace here.

    Woah! Or should that Bwoah?

Big moment for Kimi Raikkonen on the exit of Brooklands as the rear of his Ferrari slides left and right.

He holds it together, but there's got to be some concerned faces in the Ferrari garage? Both Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel have had moments in this session.

Problems for Pascal Wehrlein. Sounds like he's got a hot gearbox and he's told to box so Sauber can have a look at it.

Mercedes are back out and looking very mean.

Valtteri Bottas flies through the three sectors, nailing a lap in 1:29.106. That's quicker than last year's pole lap by Lewis Hamilton, who did 1:29.287.

I had this cracked when I lived in Swindon. Not as scary as it looks.

Plenty of tinkering going on in garages up and down the paddock, including on Fernando Alonso's McLaren.

Marcus Ericsson decides its time to break the silence once again. Jolyon Palmer also heads out. He's the only driver who hasn't set a time yet.

Lloyd Hibbins: 2 laps of the M25 would satisfy race distance, but would be a bit dull. Watching the cars go over QE2 bridge would be great sight!

Joeee: Ideal circuit for Britain, why not have it in the heart of it in Stoke-on-Trent? It's basically the new Manchester

Dean Jeffery: I'd like to see the British GP eventually be at Circuit Of Wales.
