F1 has a new face this weekend, in the shape of Frenchman Pierre Gasly, who has replaced Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso.

Gasly said he felt for Kvyat, who has been dropped after under-performing this season, but added: “Unfortunately, this is how it works in this sport. He has been in my position before he came into F1. He was waiting for his chance and then he had to take the seat of someone else. Of course I feel sorry for him. He is a really good driver, talented. Unfortunately it is happening but I am pretty sure we are going to see him back on the grid at some point maybe.”

Some believe Gasly, who has an impressive record in the junior categories, has been confirmed only for two races and could be replaced if he were to under-perform. But that seems rash even for Red Bull. One issue, though, is that the final race of the Super Formula series in Japan is the same weekend as the US Grand Prix and Gasly is just half a point off the lead and very much the form man after two wins and a second place in the last three races. So do Red Bull send him back for that race, and put Kvyat back in for one weekend, or just hang on to Gasly? It seems it’s a watching brief.

Gasly said: “At the moment I don’t know how many races I will do. There is nothing confirmed.”

Paddy Lowe may not think we'll get much running today but Sergio Perez is feeling a bit more optimistic. He's jumped in the Force India and is ready to go.

The clock is counting down, despite the delay. One hour and 22 minutes to go.

The safety car is going out for a lap. I'm definitely getting Monza flashbacks seeing that out there. While we wait, let's have a quick recap of what happened at the last race.

Well... there was more drama at the start of the Singapore Grand Prix than an Eastenders Christmas special.

Ferrari, on a circuit that suited them, saw both their drivers out in the first lap after a crash involving Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Max Verstappen.

Lewis Hamilton couldn't believe his luck and went on to manage the race superbly, bringing home a win that puts the Briton firmly in control of the title race.

  14. 'No more room for mistakes'published at 03:47 British Summer Time 29 September 2017

Six races to go, 28 points in it, only 150 still available. On the face of it, the world championship is Lewis Hamilton’s to lose. He has won seven races to Sebastian Vettel’s four, and has eight poles to Vettel’s three.

And at least two of the next three races are expected to favour Mercedes over Ferrari, including this one. Fernando Alonso certainly believes Vettel now faces an uphill struggle.

“Now there is a clear advantage for Lewis so it is a risky situation for Vettel,” said the McLaren driver, who of course has been there, done it and bought the postcard. “There is no more room for mistakes where as before they were in the same position.”

On the other hand, Vettel’s average qualifying position for the season is still better than Hamilton’s, and Mercedes are worried about Ferrari’s potential at, particularly, the last three races. The title contenders themselves? Would you believe they are taking it one race at a time? Well, they are. That’s what they said, anyway. And the next one starts here.

    Hello!

Welcome along to our coverage of the Malaysian Grand Prix.

F1 fans' alarm clocks across Europe have gone off for the final time to wake them up for first practice for this race because, sadly, this is to be the final one.

Yes, after this weekend the Malaysian Grand Prix will be no more, certainly for the foreseeable future at least, ending its 19-year stay on the calendar.

Here's hoping for a memorable swansong.
