Lewis Hamilton is complaining of cuts to his team on the radio. What Lewis is feeling on the straight is a hesitancy to the car. It doesn't affect your confidence though.

Robert MacPhee: Why has Hamilton done a seven lap stint in Q1 on dry tyres? I understand the logic when it is a wet qualifying but today..?

Daniel Eckersley: Alonso saying 'I have no power'. Tick that off your bingo cards, everybody.

  3. End of the road for Sauber and Haaspublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 28 October 2017

  6. 'Our best chance of a good grid position'published at 19:15 British Summer Time 28 October 2017

Red Bull boss Christian Horner on Sky Sports: "It's been a sensible run from Max Verstappen. Daniel Ricciardo got compromised by traffic. We believe it's good enough (to get through Q1).

"If we get everything perfect there's a chance of the front row. It's close on times, it's a short lap and it's probably our best chance of a good grid position."

Great news for McLaren fans. Fernando Alonso fifth quickest so far as he continues to drain every second possible from his troubled car. Surely into Q2 for the Spaniard.

However, he does have a 20-place grid penalty to deal with, although encouraging signs for the race.

    Allan McNish
Formula 1 analyst on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

One of the reasons Ferrari and Max Verstappen are on the super soft tyres instead of the ultras is that they have fewer sets of the ultras. Mercedes have nine, Red Bull six and Ferrari seven. So if they can get through Q1 on the super softs it gives them more flexibility later on.

Mercedes are more nervous about this qualification session than any other this year.
