  4. Verstappen beats Hamilton in final practicepublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 28 October 2017

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Red Bull's Max Verstappen headed Lewis Hamilton in final practice at the Mexican Grand Prix.

Hamilton was struggling for pace for much of the session but finally got a lap together to end up 0.075 seconds slower than the Dutchman.

Verstappen was fastest despite errors at the hairpin in the final stadium section on each of his best laps.

Hamilton will win the title if he comes fifth or better on Sunday regardless of Sebastian Vettel's result.

If the German wins, the Ferrari driver needs Hamilton to be sixth or lower to keep the fight going to the next race in Brazil.

If Vettel is second, Hamilton needs only a ninth-place finish to secure the title.

I would say Red Bull are looking very sharp. It's going to need a very good lap from Lewis Hamilton to make it to the front row of the grid. It's going to be a very tight battle.

I think qualifying is going to be very, very close. From my observations in the Stadium section, Max Verstappen has a lot of time to come. If he hooks it up he's looking pretty sharp.

And that is the end of session three. And we have had three different drivers go fastest in three sessions - Valtteri Bottas in session one, Daniel Ricciardo in session two and now Max Verstappen in session three.

Lewis Hamilton, as he has been in all sessions so far, is the second quickest.

Sebastian Vettel is third and will be hoping for better in qualifying later on.

No McLaren on the list, with Fernando Alonso 18th and Stoffel Vandoorne 19th, although both are going to be near the back of the grid because of hefty track penalties.

A fascinating practice session so far. Now it is Lewis Hamilton who moves up to second. But he misses out on Verstappen's best time by only 0.075 seconds. So, so close. Eleven minutes left for Hamilton to edge past the Dutchman.

Only four tenths of a second separate the top six.

There is so much more time to come from Max Verstappen. He had a lock up out there in sector three - there are a couple tenths of a second for him to find.

  19. Hamilton now sixthpublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 28 October 2017

Ricciardo's Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen extends his advantage with a time of 1:17.113. The track record has been broken five times in this session. Qualifying could be very, very interesting.
