When Formula 1 raced in extreme conditions

We've had lots of response to our call for those times when Formula 1 has raced in extreme conditions.

Here's the first one where it has been too hot, and it comes from Dallas in 1984, when the air temperature at the start of the race was an insane 40C. It all got too much for Nigel Mansell.

Any more extreme conditions you can remember? Let us know, via #bbcf1

Only five drivers have been on the track today, while another eight were scheduled to be but have not been seen.

But what about the rest, those who were not racing (or meant to be racing)? Here's what three of them have done.

Kevin Magnussen has been posing for photos, Pierre Gasly has been answering fans questions on social media, with Charles Leclerc doing some interviews.

For the first time in an hour, we have had a driver out on track.

Robert Kubica of Williams has done an installation lap.

That means we have had four teams look at the track conditions (Red Bull, McLaren, Sauber and Williams) with six (Ferrari, Haas, Force India, Toro Rosso, Mercedes and Renault) deciding against it.

Today has been disappointing, but the rest of the testing should be good.

We are in action again tomorrow, before another block of four days from Tuesday, 6 March to Friday, 9 March.

Cloudy tomorrow, with sunny spells on the sixth, a full day of sunshine on the seventh and more sunny spells on the eighth and ninth.

We haven't had much action to enjoy today. Four laps in total, and that's it.

But two of those laps have come from Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and here, courtesy of the Formula 1 Twitter account, is a bit of one of them.

Savour the moment. Enjoy the video.

On day one, Daniel Ricciardo certainly put in an effort - 105 laps in fact - and was the quickest.

Yesterday, on day two, Sebastian Vettel was 0.303 seconds faster than Valtteri Bottas.

  18. We have learned a lot in Spain - Bottaspublished at 13:24 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2018

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

This has been a pretty difficult week for the teams, with the track conditions very cold and unrepresentative even when it has not been raining.

But Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas says it has not been wasted. “I have learned a lot about how to get heat in the tyres which can be a benefit sometimes,” the Finn said.

“I have learned about general behaviour and how it handles and how to drive it. But I still need better conditions to unlock everything. We have learned a lot from our aero testing.

"We have done some mechanical tests and got some answers we can trust a good percentage even though it’s cold. It is not two days lost yet. Everyone is looking ahead for tomorrow and next week.”

I get the feeling that good things are coming.

Daniel Ricciardo, for a second time, heads out for a lap. Still too wet though, and he makes an instant return. He has two laps done, Fernando Alonso and Marcus Ericsson one each.

Sadly, the trusty Formula 1 timing app has the dreaded 'in pit' words next to the names of our potential 13 drivers today.
