Sebastian Vettel lowers the benchmark again. A 1:17.182 on hypersofts and that's now a second quicker than Daniel Ricciardo's time from yesterday.

    Flying.

A personal best for Pierre Gasly in the Toro Rosso as he does a 1:19.358.

That moves him all the way up to sixth.

Sergio Perez also improves, clocking 1:19.85, but he stays 10th.

A run of 1:18.576-1:18.633-1:18.989 from Magnussen on the super-softs. On the face of it, those are stonking times from Haas. So stonking, in fact, that you have to think something doesn't quite add up.

Tyre-correct those - ignoring the amount of fuel on board - and they make the Haas quicker than the Ferrari. And that surely can't be true.

    Wonder what's going on?

How low can he go? Sebastian Vettel improves again, this time clocking 1:17.644.

I haven't called something mega since 1995 but I think Vettel's time warrants the use of the word on this occasion.

    No messing!

Sebastian Vettel kicks down the door to the 1:17s club and storms in.

It's a 1:17.913 for the Ferrari man. That's the fastest time we've seen in testing so far, an unofficial lap record and a tenth quicker than Daniel Ricciardo's best from yesterday.

Ominous, step out from the word cupboard.

A very good day for Bobby K.

Dave Taylor: You need to learn from experience mate, bring a packed lunch tomorrow then you can type while you munch.

But I need the incentive to leave the desk, if even for a little while. When I brought a packed lunch last week and didn't move for 10 hours, several people moved away from the desks around me over the course of the day.

I believe the two are connected.

  12. McLaren 'on fire'published at 11:14 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2018

Stoffel Vandoorne hasn't been out for a while, almost an hour I make it. That's prompted a few worried messages on social media but fear not, Vandoorne has just tweeted some fire emojis. That's a good thing.

    I think.

  13. K-Mag goes secondpublished at 11:13 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2018

Very impressive lap by Kevin Magnussen!

The Haas has supersoft tyres on and leaps up to second on the timesheet with 1:18.576, within half a second of Sebastian Vettel's time on the faster tyre.

Renault report that a new front wing has been on and Nico Hulkenberg is on scrubbed tyres for now but "all looks sensible and as expected".

This is one of a number of new parts Renault are trying this week.

Simon Kendall: I think Renault will be forth. Why? Gut feeling. After all, testing doesn't really tell us followers anything. Example being Sauber usually throw up one brilliant lap time each year to make you go WOW. But then go mellow when it matters.

  17. Showing their true pace?published at 10:57 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2018

Quicker again by Sebastian Vettel as he posts a 1:18.079 on the ultrasofts.

Wonder if this show of pace may tempt Mercedes into a response? Valtteri Bottas is currently way down in ninth, although they are putting in the miles rather than fast times. Bottas has done 67 laps so far today, 10 more than anyone else.

Chris Marsh: I've missed most of the morning session so far. Big question for you Gary: Do you get a lunch break today?

There's been no announcement one way or the other so the signs are promising!

That does, however, mean no random person is going to give me a £1,000 today (see first entry of the day)

Meanwhile, Robert Kubica is now the fastest Williams driver in winter testing. His time of 1:20.202 is quicker than Lance Stroll (1:20.349) and Sergey Sirotkin (1:21.588).

Bottas' time has come on the supersofts, however, with the other two setting their personal bests on the harder softs.

Ferrari start to flex their muscles as Sebastian Vettel follows up a slow lap with a personal best. The time to beat is now 1:18.414.

That lap also takes him to 50 for the morning and with that he heads in.
