  5. Plugging in a pit stop practicepublished at 10:25 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2018

Red Bull did a series of pit stops as testing wound down yesterday with Daniel Ricciardo doing a lap between each one.

Other teams plug in a single pit stop practice whenever they can. Today, for example, when Stoffel Vandoorne had completed a run of laps, he pitted and the McLaren crew changed the tyres. Then they pushed the car into the garage to work on it.

And as I post that, we have a new leader!

Nico Hulkenberg goes quickest of all with 1:18.684, two tenths quicker than Stoffel Vandoorne.

Like Vandoorne, that time has come on the hypersofts.

  7. Postpublished at 10:21 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2018

Two cars on the track at the moment - the Renault and the Mercedes.

Nico Hulkenberg is currently second quickest with Valtteri Bottas all the way down in P8. Low key day so far for Mercedes, but it's not like they have to do anything to catch the eye in testing. It's been trouble-free for them so far.

  9. 'Technical reason for hypersofts'published at 10:13 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2018

McLaren have largely limited their testing programme so far to using the two softest tyres - hypersoft and ultrasoft.

A few people are asking what their reason for this is and Eric Boullier had this to say yesterday: “On the tyres, if you look at the lap time, Red Bull did a test this morning, [they] put on new mediums [and then] new softs.

"They are half a second faster only, so there is not much difference because of the tarmac specification and the temperature as well.

"We have a technical reason why we want to work on the car with these [hypersoft] tyres."

Stoffel Vandoorne has a different tyre compound on now, moving on from the hypersofts to the supersofts.

Nine laps away from 50 laps for the day. Fernando Alonso managed 57 on day two.

Jon Cross: I’m hoping @McLarenF1, external will be the best of the rest, a second quicker than the Toro Rosso on the same tyres shows progress in pace, top speeds slightly worrying though, would love a 1:19 on softs firsts too.

Assuming Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull will once again be the dominant three, who are you predicting to be the best of the rest and why? And what has testing taught you so far?
