  2. Race summarypublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 13 May 2018

Lewis Hamilton won for the second race in succession by dominating an eventful Spanish Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver was supreme at the front in a race that featured a heavy first-lap crash, two caution periods and a number of spins and collisions.

Hamilton's win moves him into a 17-point championship lead, with title rival Sebastian Vettel fourth on Sunday following questionable strategy calls from his Ferrari team.

Valtteri Bottas made it a Mercedes one-two ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

More from race winner Lewis Hamilton, who tells Sky Sports: "It felt special, it felt strong. We got qualifying right yesterday. Once I got going and got a good start, after that no-one had the pace to keep up with me and I was pulling away at a second a lap.

"Today was the closest I've been. There were still areas that was not quite perfect, but this is the closest to how I was last year in terms of being comfortable with the car.

"Ferrari made a mistake with their strategy but to get a one-two is really hard to do."

  8. 'We thought top 15 would be difficult'published at 16:37 British Summer Time 13 May 2018

Sauber's Charles Leclerc, who finished 10th, told Sky Sports: "I'm very happy there are still things I could have done better. P10, but before the weekend we thought top 15 would be difficult to get. We had a very good start, a great start for once.

"I'm obviously very happy with the start of the season I have learned a lot the last two races have been very positive for us now we will work to achieve more."

  9. 'If I had braked, the car would have spun the same way'published at 16:34 British Summer Time 13 May 2018

Romain Grosjean, who spun on the first lap and also took out Pierre Gasly and Nico Hulkenberg, told Sky Sports: "I lost the rear end of the car tried to get the position back, but it didn't work. If I had braked, the car would have spun the same way.

"It is quite a normal human reflex (to keep accelerating), once the car went on to the track it was very difficult."

  11. 'Pretty boring'published at 16:29 British Summer Time 13 May 2018

Lewis Hamilton wins the Spanish Grand Prix

Daniel Ricciardo, who finished fifth, said: "It was a bit tricky to drive, it was fast when you could put it together but it was easy to make mistakes.

"If you got lucky you could put in a blistering lap - one out of five I could make it happen, the others I was trying to just stay on. At the beginning I felt we were hanging on. In the VSC (virtual safety car) I had a spin on the restart, fortunately there were no walls.

"There were signs of good pace, but it was a pretty boring race."

  12. 'Max did a great job with a wounded car'published at 16:25 British Summer Time 13 May 2018

Lewis Hamilton wins the Spanish Grand Prix

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner told Sky Sports: "It is good to get both cars to the finish, we did everything we could strategically. Max did a great job fending off Sebastian, albeit with a wounded car.

"We had a very fast race car again, our problem is we need to do better on the Saturday. Starting fifth or sixth you are in dirty air. We are looking forward to the next race in Monaco. Both drivers have gone round well there so that is an opportunity for us.

"For Max to stand on the podium for the first time this season, it will really settle him and get him on his way."

On Verstappen driving into the back of Lance Stroll under the virtual safety car, Horner added: "We were lucky to get away that the damage was not more."

  15. 'A decent weekend overall'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 13 May 2018

Sebastian Vettel, who finished fourth: "It was not an option to stay out, it obviously looks wrong but from the inside it was the right thing to do.

"Overall we were quicker (then Red Bull) as the laps went on we just didn't have enough pace. At the end we were not in a good place with the tyres even though mine were fresher.

"Overall it has been a decent weekend, we just need to understand what to do with these tyres."

A good race for the home favourites as both Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz finished inside the points.

Alonso has now secured eight consecutive points finishes, the first time he has done that since he was at Ferrari in 2014.

Just popped by? Here's a reminder of how the Spanish Grand Prix panned out:

    • Lewis Hamilton wins it by 20 seconds, with team-mate Valtteri Bottas second and Red Bull's Max Verstappen third.
    • Ferrari are left regretting bringing in Sebastian Vettel for a second pit stop as he only finishes fourth, with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Haas' Kevin Magnussen finishing fifth and sixth respectively.
    • Carlos Sainz (seventh), Fernando Alonso (eighth), Sergio Perez (ninth) and Charles Leclerc (10th) make up the rest of the top 10.
    • Romain Grosjean, Pierre Gasly and Nico Hulkenberg suffer a big crash on the opening lap, as Grosjean spun across the track and a safety car was deployed with all three drivers' races ended.
    • Kimi Raikkonen, who was second, retires on lap 27 with a lack of power.
    • Esteban Ocon was the fifth retirement, suffering an engine failure on lap 40. Verstappen ran into the back of Lance Stroll during the resulting virtual safety car period but the Dutchman was still able to continue despite front wing damage.
    • Stoffel Vandoorne suffers a power issue and stops on the 47th lap.

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff tells BBC Radio 5 live sports extra: "For us it was a scary race, Valtteri was taking the tyres for 41 laps and it looked easier than it was. We were not sure what the right thing was to do.

"It is great. Bounce back, we are back in the lead and we are going to hold on to it."

  19. 'Hard to pass'published at 16:03 British Summer Time 13 May 2018

Max Verstappen, who finished third, said: "The car was working really well, it is hard to pass, we just stayed close and got the luck with Kimi retiring.

"The tyres were handling really well and that gave us third place. I had to keep pushing as I had Sebastian behind me."

  20. 'As a team this weekend we have been perfect'published at 15:59 British Summer Time 13 May 2018

Valtteri Bottas, who finished second: "Of course I wanted to fight for the win today but as a team it was a good race. We had such a good car and the team was so reactive with strategy.

"As a team this weekend we have been perfect. For me, the wins will come."
