What can Valtteri Bottas do? He's well out of sync with everyone having had that rear-wing replacement. He's put himself on the back foot for the entire day with that careless incident.

It was a sloppy, sloppy error earlier on.

More problems for Romain Grosjean in his Haas. He is now having his car worked on and he is slowest of the lot and he has a three-place grid penalty. Sometimes you just know it's not going to be your weekend.

  6. 'It's a special feeling'published at 11:25 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer in Monaco

Toro Rosso’s Brendon Hartley has a had a torrid start to his first full season, a series of unfortunate mistakes leading already to questions about his future before this race. But he provided the perfect answer on Thursday in Monaco. On a track where he has not raced since 2011 in Formula Renault 3.5, he ended the day 11th fastest, an impressive achievement. “It was a really positive day,” he said. "It’s awesome to drive around Monaco for the first time in a Formula 1 car.

"It’s a special feeling around here, dancing from wall to wall. In terms of performance, I think straight away we were in the top 10 on the hyper-soft (tyre). We finished the morning P12, but running on the harder compound tyre, which looked positive. In the afternoon, I was 11th on the hyper-soft, which is promising. It’s very close to the cars ahead and also the cars behind. We’re definitely in the fight, and the goal has to be Q3.”

Team-mate Pierre Gasly admitted that, at least in Thursday, he had some catching up to do. “I didn’t really find the right settings to feel fully comfortable with the car, so I’m a bit out of sync at the moment. But Brendon looks pretty good, so we’re probably going to work and analyse more tonight to try and find the best package. The car seems to be fast, so if we manage to find 0.2-0.3secs, I think we can fight to be in the top 10 - that will be the target for us to work towards tomorrow.”

  7. Verstappen now quicker than Ricciardopublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

A great lap from Max Verstappen of 1:11.990 to go quickest today. That is just over one tenth of a second slower than Ricciardo's track record set on Thursday.

Red Bull once again looking the team to beat. Vettel is five tenths off the pace, Hamilton seven tenths.

  8. Unhappy Grosejanpublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

Romain Grosjean has a lot on his plate at the moment. No points on the board, a three-place grid penalty to deal with for Sunday and he is unhappy with firstly Charles Leclerc and then Nico Hulkenberg for getting in his way. Well, it is Monaco so there is not much room to play with.

Pierre Gasly also clips a barrier so may have to retreat back to the pits for some repairs.

Ricciardo, first lap of the day, straight out the block and picks off where he left off on Thursday. But I think he's going to get quicker and quicker.

  10. Ricciardo leading the waypublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

We are getting quicker and the times are tumbling. Sebastian Vettel regains top spot in the times, thanks to a 1:12.482, but here comes Red Bull and Vettel is soon bumped off the top.

Jolyon said Mercedes were giving it absolutely everything and that has seen Lewis Hamilton jump to the top with a 1:12.696.

Mercedes were only third and seventh in session one and fourth and sixth in session two with Hamilton quicker on both occasions.

While Hamilton is leading the way, Bottas has just had his rear wing replaced after banging the barrier.

Half of the drivers have not set a time yet, including both of the Red Bulls. So it is Ferrari who are leading the way, thanks to Kimi Raikkonen's 1:12.978, less than two tenths of a second quicker than Sebastian Vettel.

Mercedes were worried about being on the back foot this weekend and were fourth and sixth in FP2 on Thursday. They've really started aggressively here. Clearly giving it absolutely everything from the word go.

  18. McLaren hopeful of a good daypublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer in Monaco

Monaco has been one of McLaren’s better tracks in recent years, even at their lowest points with the Honda engine. Last year, Stoffel Vandoorne looked like he was on course to qualify around sixth/seventh before he crashed at the end of Q2. So one might have expected that they would be strong this weekend. Instead, they had a difficult start to Thursday.

Fernando Alonso missed most of the first session with a brake-by-wire problem and Vandoorne was struggling down in 15th. They improved to eighth and ninth in the afternoon - Vandoorne ahead - but there is still work to do. The Belgian said: “The practice sessions did not go as smoothly as we wanted. We made a big step in P2. The car came together a lot more and in the end I think we found more or less back a normal feeling.

"There is still a feeling like we can make a step forward. hopefully a day off will be beneficial for us to put the car in even better position for qualifying. we feel there is still a step to come and hopefully we can show that in qualifying.” Alonso said that by the end of Thursday he had still not quite made up for the lack of track time and that he had “not fully yet” developed the level of confidence he needed. “There is still more to come in P3,” he said. “Hopefully we will put the lap together in qualifying.”

We are under way. One hour for the third practice session. McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne is the most eager man out there as he gets out straight away.
