It'll be interesting to see how much the fastest times change in the final 35 minutes of P2. There doesn't seem to be much difference between the soft, supersoft and ultrasoft tyres - and the drivers aren't getting much change out of a track that has only seven corners.

Kimi Raikkonen runs off by locking up at Turn Three - that won't do his ultrasoft tyres much good. The fastest lap remains the one that Lewis Hamilton set on the soft tyres.

"Today is the worst of the weather. It is overcast and grey. Temperatures will improve over the weekend and we will get the sun shining on this very smooth track. Hopefully that will make a difference ion the very similar tyre compounds - that have been too similar this season. Pirelli are trying to address that, but it's a little too late ion the day for that, really."

Quite a few of the drivers are being told by their teams to steer clear of the raised yellow kerbs - which are causing a fair bit of damage when the cars hit them. This has been an issue at the Red Bull Ring before.

The Toro Rosso has been cleared for the weary mechanics to work on, and the other cars back on the track. Just over 45 minutes left.

"There's a tractor picking up the Toro Rosso and moving it out of the way of the problems. There are a lot of tired mechanics there.

This is the first time there have been F1 races on three successive weekends. It hasn't happened in F1 before and there's a reason for that - the logistics. The teams have had to move everything from France, working very long days . There are a lot of very tired people already, and then they come to this race.

They've had to get the motorhomes running in about 24 hours, they normally have three days. For somebody to have a big incident in their car, you can imagine the mechanics, thinking: 'Oh no, not more work?'"

Oh dear, Pierre Gasly has gone straight of at Turn Ten. Damaged suspension?

Yep. "Broke the suspension on the kerb," he reports on his radio. The red flag comes out, and we have to stop the session while this is sorted out.

As we suspected, Fernando Alonso's McLaren is in need of substantial repairs to its floor after having an argument with the kerbs around the track.

Sebastian Vettel continues to seek those vital extra fractions of a second on the ultrasofts - and it's not happening. Not yet, anyhow.

Vettel, on the ultrasoft tyres, is not making the improvement he wanted - he's quick through the middle section of the track, but not so much in the other two. He sticks third, still 0.236 seconds behind Lewis Hamilton.

Fernando Alonso's McLaren is being given significant work here - it doesn't look as if he'll be out any time soon.

We've an hour to go, and the drivers are starting to come out for qualifying simulations - here comes Sebastian Vettel, in the Ferrari...

Carlos Sainz goes off the track at Turn Four and into the gravel - but is OK to continue.

Valtteri Bottas, meanwhile, goes second with a time of 1:04.767. All of the cars - bar Bottas and Max Verstappen - are now back in the pits, and are gearing up for qualifying simulation.

Jacqui Baker-Stubbs: Evening Gents. I missed FP1 (still at work in Australia) but tuning in now. What have I missed? My McLarens aren’t looking great.

No, indeed - but Alonso and Vandoorne were in the bottom five in P1. Mercedes on top in that session, with Hamilton leading Bottas, Red Bull third and fifth, Ferrari fouth and sixth. Usual top six, with Kimi Raikkonen at the rear.

A bit of a weird moment for Sauber's Marcus Ericsson just now, as he locks up in Turn Four and heads into the gravel trap. He gets out with no damage to the car - although whether you could say the same for the tyres is another matter. Let's put the scores onthe doors for P2 so far - we've had just under 20 minutes.

Pleased to hear that BBC Radio 5 live sports extra has now picked up on the F1/pop crossover talk. Andrew Benson, in particular, is sounding very knowledgable on his 70s Swedish pop. Listen in by clicking the icon at the top of this page.

On the track, Red Bull and Mercedes are hanging back in the garage for now, leaving Ferrari to top the standings. Sebastian Vettel is quickest in P2 so far, Kimi Raikkonen second.

My colleague Jamie Strickland, responding to the thread on F1/pop crossovers, has just sent me a two-word email.

To my surprise, it wasn't those two words.

Instead, it just reads 'Slim Borgudd'.

Borgudd scored one point in his brief F1 career, and also performed as a drummer in ABBA.
