  1. Mercedes double trouble...published at 15:57 British Summer Time 1 July 2018

The Sky Sports stats team has been asking the question: When did Mercedes last have a double mechanical retirement? The answer they have come back with? The Italian Grand Prix... of 1955.

Mike K Douglas‏: How have Mercedes not noticed that Hamilton destroys tyres? He’s been struggling to keep them in shape for ages now and it’s getting worse! He makes super softs look like ultras!

Jacqui Baker-Stubbs: I’m not sure if I should be surprised that Kimi wasn’t asked to pull aside for Vettel?

Jeremiah Kariuki: Mercedes came to the track as the favourite. Everyone was saying this was their race to lose. And they did that. They lost the lost with some clumsy strategy.

You'll notice Fernando Alonso has taken eighth place there. About 15 minutes into the race, the McLaren driver was grumbling on his radio that he did not have the strategy to complete 71 laps. You can understand his cynicism, given his misfortunes at the past three races - but he not only finished, he picked up four points. That takes him on to 36 for the season.

  5. 'A positive day, but it could've been better'published at 15:48 British Summer Time 1 July 2018

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who came third, said: "I told Max he had a very good race, very consistent, no mistakes.

"Obviously it would've been nice to start further up, I was left with no place to go at turn one and lost the momentum.

"It was damage limitation but the pace was very good and the tyre management was very good. A positive day but it could've been better."

Kimi Raikkonen, who finished second: "I had to back off at turn one because the cars were squeezed together. After that, the car came good, but we just ran out of laps, and we took it easily too long. We had the right car, today, some points were a little bit difficult, but it was a good day for the team."

    Lap 70/71

Max Verstappen is very, very close to his fourth career win, and his first of the season. But Kimi Raikkonen is only 2.403 seconds behind...

  20. Incredible stuffpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 1 July 2018

    Lap 68/71

    • Both Mercedes are out of the race, as is Ricciardo, Hulkenberg and Hartley.
    • Verstappen, who started fourth is now first, more than three seconds in front of Raikkonen, with Vettel third.
    • Hamilton, who started second, got a great start and overtook polesitter Bottas, who dropped from first to fourth on the first lap, before recovering back to second. However, Bottas' race ended on lap 14 because his car lost hydraulic pressure.
    • Both Red Bulls and both Ferraris pit during the virtual safety car caused by Bottas' stop, but race leader Hamilton does not pit. When he does pit 10 laps later he drops from first to fourth. Mercedes' chief strategist admits blame for the mistake. Vettel gets past title rival Hamilton on lap 38 before the Brit has to stop from fourth with a power issue on lap 64.
    • Ricciardo was fourth when he suffered a gear problem on lap 51 and eventually had to stop.
    • Hulkenberg was the first man out of the race after his engine was spectacularly on fire on lap 12, with a mechanical fault taking out Hartley on lap 56.
    • McLaren's Vandoorne had his front wing damaged early on but is able to continue but is last of those running, with team-mate Alonso eighth after starting from the pits.
