Summary

  • Red Bull's Max Verstappen quickest in FP2

  • Sister Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo fastest in FP1 but will start race from back after engine penalties

  • McLaren and Williams cars struggling at back of pack

  • Sebastian Vettel leads the drivers' championship, Lewis Hamilton second

  1. Verstappen leads the waypublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 20 July 2018

Max Verstappen, on the softs, is our new leader thanks to a 1:13.356, with Valtteri Bottas, on the same tyres, three tenths back in second.

Lewis Hamilton, on the mediums, is down in third, but a 1:13.703 on those tyres seems a great effort. Most teams are splitting the strategies with one car on mediums and the other on softs.

Esteban Ocon is not too impressed with Fernando Alonso after the pair nearly collide. An angry wave of the fist from the Frenchman. No real drama though.

Much better from Sebastian Vettel. He shaves nearly a second off his earlier leading time with a 1:13.817 and Kimi Raikkonen is just behind him on 1:13.915.

Sixteen drivers have set times, the two Red Bulls and the two Mercedes are the four who have not done so yet. But plenty of time left.

  6. Vettel goes to the toppublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 20 July 2018

Vettel goes fastest on the mediums with the hypersofts saved for later on. A time of 1:14.700 is the best we've got so far in session two, although that would have only been good enough for eighth fastest in session one.

Some tyre chat for you... Ferrari did not use the ultrasofts in session one.

Who should be racing in 2019 and for which teams?

Ryan Parker‏: Williams need a driver change, one or the other has to go. Wehrlein would be ideal or try for Sainz. McLaren have to give Norris a seat, unfortunately no place for Vandoorne. If Toro Rosso are giving second chances get Jean-Eric Vergne back in F1. If Bottas is doing such a stellar job, why only a one-year contract with a second year option?

Ross Price‏: Raikkonen vs Leclerc vs Magnussen for the second Ferrari seat. At a push...probably Leclerc given his impressive season. However, is Ericsson a good barometer...or are Magnussen's performances that impressive vs Grosjean in his current form?!

It's a good point Ryan makes. Bottas is only working in one-year deals so maybe Mercedes still have their doubts. Waiting for someone better to become available?

Who should be racing in 2019 and for which teams?

JJ Jackson: Nice to see Mercedes not messing about with drivers, but you've got to feel for Bottas...interesting comments from Vettel re Leclerc. Think he's worried about being found out, a la Ricciardo?

Kayleigh‍: Think it’s time we said goodbye to Kimi and Sirotkin, and perhaps Alonso? Hulk, and Danny R to stay where they are. Bring Aitken and Norris up to take seats at McLaren and Renault. Carlos back to TR with Gasly. And for entertainment, let Maldonado come back for one year.

Maldonando and Verstappen and Grosjean at the same corner. Would be lively.

Who should be racing in 2019 and for which teams?

If you were with us this morning you would have seen us talking about the new contracts for Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

We still want your thoughts on that, but also let's throw it a bit wider.

That means we only have four of the 20 drivers for 2019 sorted out - Hamilton, Bottas, Vettel and Verstappen.

But who should fill the other 16 spots? Which drivers need to change teams, which drivers deserve a new contract, who should leave Formula 1 and who should come back? Tweet us using the hashtag #bbcf1 to have your say.

Miss the first session? Well, this is what happened.

There was a nervous moment for Nico Hulkenberg as he went through the gravel, narrowly avoiding the wall, with Kimi Raikkonen among those to also go off the track, but nothing too major.

What may be more of a concern for the under-pressure Finn is the fact he fact he was nearly five tenths slower than his team-mate.

Daniel Ricciardo was fastest, but because of grid penalties coming his way after changing parts of his engine, he will be starting at the back on Sunday.
