Toro Rosso driver Brendon Hartley, who picked up his second championship point of the season by finishing 10th, speaking to Sky Sports: "I've doubled my points for the season. It was a really good race for me.

"We had some great scraps out there, although I was disappointed to lose position to Romain Grosjean near the end, I'm happy.

"When the team asked me to box and I asked for one more lap. It could have been the wrong decision, but it worked for us. We took a risk and I was happy to get a point."

Some more from Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports: "Yesterday, we saw how bad it can run. And in 24 hours, it can all turn round. I feel for Vettel because it's his home Grand Prix.

"It was the moment that gave us the win, and we were punching the air in our garage, but I can still feel sympathy for him.

"I think Ferrari were over the moon at Silverstone two weeks ago and maybe we should be here. It's great for Mercedes to win at Hockenheim."

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports: "This win is very good for the team. The battle continues. We didn't have the quickest car yesterday and we know we have to work. It's going to be up and down throughout the season."

Asked if he believes that Mercedes can match the improved Ferrari engine: "Of course. When you are the challenger, you see what the others are doing and that obviously gives you a target. Now we need to leave no stone unturned."

"Normally we would say Hungary is not a good one for us. I would say the track does not suit our car."

Asked if Ferrari are still favourites in the championship race: "Yes, even though we have the lead. They will be the enemy to beat."

Renault's Nico Hulkenberg, who secured his best finish of the season by taking fifth, speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm very happy. The first half was a standard, boring race but once the rain came it unfolded nicely.

"It was tricky keeping on the road, but that's where we made the gains. Some more of the crazy conditions would have been nice, but I'll take this.

"It reminded me a lot of Brazil 2012. It reminded me a lot of this, but we made the right decisions, and we deserved P5 today."

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports about the decision to enforce team orders on Valtteri Bottas: "We had these last three races with so much bad luck and we didn't want to have a fight.

"We said: 'Guys, let's bring it home.' If I could, I would have stopped it earlier, but I didn't expect Valtteri to go so hard."

Nico Rosberg, working as a pundit for Sky, then chips in: "Maybe you have too many memories of Mercedes drivers fighting each other." Wolff does not disagree.

Esteban Ocon, who secured his third successive points finish by coming eighth, tells Sky Sports: "Really great fun. Really enjoyed that. Fantastic result for the team today."

Force India's Sergio Perez, who was seventh, speaking to Sky Sports: "A great result for us and a great amount of points.

"In the midfield group, we scored the most points. There was so much craziness, even before the rain. I had a bad stop and a spin but we achieved a great result. In the last lap, I lost one position with Grosjean, but it was a great result.

"If it had rained like this half-an-hour ago, it would have been great, but it wasn't to be."

Race-winner Lewis Hamiton, speaking at the post-race press conference: "It's great to be here on Mercedes' home ground and get the one-two. It's just a tremendous day for us. I've never had a race like this.

"After racing for some many years, you never know where you're going to have a race as good as your best. This was up there with them."

Marcus Ericsson's ninth place takes him above Lance Stroll, while Romain Grosjean comes in the points for only the second time this season with a sixth-placed finish to jump up to 13th overall, moving ahead of Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc.

Daniel Ricciardo, who failed to finish, tells Sky Sports: "I felt it breaking for turn six, once I accelerated I expected something and it was under-powered. It didn't sound healthy.

"In the first 10-15 laps it was hard with the medium - it was not a good tyre, I had no grip then once i got clear we were starting to be competitive. It is racing I've been here too often, it hurts but what can you do? We will hopefully go and win in a week's time."

Sebastian Vettel started the day with an eight-point advantage, now Lewis Hamilton is top dog, with a 17-point lead.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who finished fourth, speaking to Sky Sports: "Luckily, the mistake (when he was put on intermediate tyres and had to change them a few laps later) didn't make a difference. Everybody should have come in after the safety car for new tyres. I wish the rain had come down a little later.

"Today we were not too bad, even though we lost a little on the straights. We're looking forward to Hungary."

Sebastian Vettel, who crashed out of the race, speaking to Sky Sports: "Well, I was in the barrier and realised I couldn't get out. How do you process that?

"I don't think it was a huge mistake. It's not like I will have huge difficulties sleeping tonight because I made a big mistake. We didn't need the rain.

"We have a strong car, so we can be as confident, more confident, than anybody else. It was one of those moments. My mistake. Apologise to the team. Small mistake, big disappointment. The tyres weren't fresh, but it was slippery for everyone."

Kush K‏: You will never see Sebastian Vettel coming from 14th to win a Grand Prix. Our boy Lewis does it again.
