    Pre-season testing provides the first opportunity to put questions to Lewis Hamilton, with Mercedes having done a private shakedown and launch event last week. If you can get within sight that is...

    Hamilton has had two half-days of running so far this week, and while he insists it will be a long time before he starts comparing the performance of his Mercedes to other teams, he adds: “Ferrari are very, very strong right now, as you’ve seen ... It appears it’s going to be even more of a challenge for us this year”.

    After doing a race simulation on Tuesday, Nico Hulkenberg is behind the wheel of the Renault this morning and will work on what the team describe as "a programme aimed at shorter-based runs assessing the softer compounds on the Pirelli range".

    Following the failure of the DRS overtaking aid when Daniel Ricciardo was driving on Tuesday, when he narrowly avoided crashing during a high-speed spin at the end of the straight, they will not run DRS this morning. The team are very short on spares after battling to get the car ready in time for the test, as are many others, and they cannot afford a crash.

    Two days of testing so far, and at the start of each one driver has spun and ended up in the gravel at Turn Four on his first lap out of the pits. On day one, it was 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen; on day it was a man at the opposite end of the experience continuum, Toro Rosso rookie Alexander Albon. The British-born Thai said: “I was thinking, don’t spin it, and that’s exactly what I did. The morning was a little bit difficult but I didn’t want to think about it too much. I thought, hey, the track is cold, Kimi did it yesterday, so that reassured me a little bit.”

    It was Albon’s first run in an F1 car, other than the shakedown at Misano in Italy last week, and he said it had been “a bit of a shock”. “It’s a huge step,” said Albon, who ended the day with fourth quickest time. “Massive. I had this perception of what it was going to be like, but your mind can’t believe how quick these things are in Turns Three and Nine.

    “I knew what the car would do from the simulator but once you have the G-forces and the speed, it does take a while. You know in your mind what the car can do, but doing it is a different story. It took a while to build up and there is still some margin there.

    “There is so much grip. It is just trying to push those extra 10ths out when you and the car are connected. That will take a bit more time."

    Dan W: Very sad to see a team with such rich history struggling so badly in recent years. I really hope @WilliamsRacing can escape this apparent death spiral, even if it means changing their modus operandi to emulate the likes of Haas & Racing Point.

    David Dawson: Good to see the Fittipaldi name back in an #F1, external car.

    JOKora: What if @WilliamsRacing has been playing us all along and we fell for it? They get going and it's a beast of a car. Hope it turns out that way.

    Simon Kennedy: It's disappointing to have seen the downfall of one of the biggest names in F1. Hopefully watching Williams battle for championships is something we can see again in the not too distant future!

    They are the only team aside from Williams not to appear so far, but final preparations are taking place at the moment and the MCL34 should be ready to head out in the next half hour or so.

    Hardly a major crisis given the team have completed 223 laps so far over the opening two days. In 2017 they managed just 208 throughout the whole first test, and only improved that to 260 last year.

    Since we don't know what programmes the teams are running during testing, we don't know what tyres they're on unless we see them out on track. But more importantly, we don't know how their times compare with their fuel loads...

    Chris says: As on the first two days it’s Ferrari setting the pace. Vettel with a 1:18.614 on C2 tyres. In these temperatures (no sun) that’s probably more impressive than his day one time.

    Andrew says: It's a good time, but correct the previous best times for the minimum amount of fuel Vettel & Leclerc must have had on board given length of run and they both come out to a 1:17.7 (on a C3). This 18.6 on the harder C2s might be quicker - but it depends on fuel loads.

    Sebastian Vettel versus Charles Leclerc at Ferrari is one of the most anticipated battles of the season, and it is already starting to brew nicely. Two days into testing, they have topped a day each, as convincingly as each other, with times only 0.086secs apart.

    Interestingly, on a perfect lap - ie, if both had put their best sectors together - Leclerc would be ahead by 0.104secs. And to keep up the symmetry, both had spins at the chicane. Leclerc said: “I am very happy with the way today went. Despite some red-flag interruptions, we were able to get through all our programme and to do 157 laps, which has produced a lot of useful data. In terms of feeling, I quickly felt comfortable with the SF90 and I have to say I really enjoyed myself.

    "Emotion? There’s always going to be some when you get into a Ferrari, but today I put that to one side because I had a job to do for the team. Let’s hope we keep going like this over the next few days, because it’s important to make the most of the few on-track testing opportunities we have.”

    Wayne Hunt: it’s a massive shame that the last of the British Privately owned F1 team is having this amount of trouble. Hopefully they are able to bring the whole package to the grid.
