  1. 'Nobody is going to try a lunge in testing'published at 16:18 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

    Chris Medland
    F1 journalist in Barcelona

While we’re trying to work out the pecking order, another of the big unknowns is how the new aerodynamic regulations will affect overtaking.

The overall aim is to make the following car less sensitive to one just ahead, and therefore able to stay closer in order to try and make a move. Whether that actually happens remains to be seen, but there have been a few cautiously optimistic noises from certain drivers and team bosses, and the changes shouldn’t make things any worse at least...

There’s just been a spell of track action where a number of cars were following each other closely and didn’t back off for a number of laps. It seemed OK, but then nobody is going to try a lunge in testing (Giovinazzi was letting Vettel by here when the Ferrari locked up)

A couple of questions for the rest of the day. Are we going to see anyone smash their time to pieces? And are we going to see Valtteri Bottas on track again? He's the only man to have not set a time after that oil pressure problem.

  7. Reliability OK, not fantastic - Hulkenbergpublished at 15:56 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

Some quotes from Renault's Nico Hulkenberg, who drove for 80 laps in the morning. He tells the Formula 1 website: "The car is mainly the same as we finished last no week, no big differences.

"It was a positive morning. We are here trying to improve the car and make it better, reliability has been OK, not fantastic, we had a few hiccups, but the team reacted well.

"For me we are in a good shape. For the team it is important to accumulate a lot of mileage."

  11. 100 up for Gaslypublished at 15:32 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

Pierre Gasly is clearly having a great time out there. He's leading the way and becomes our second man to go past the 100-lap barrier after Kevin Magnussen. George Russell has done the next most laps on 95, but he's still in the pits right now.

He was in the pits for a bit, but not for long. Renault have done lots of fact-finding laps today, although are not too high up the times with Nico Hulkenberg 10th fastest and Daniel Ricciardo 11th fastest of 12 to have set a time.

  16. Alonso causing a stirpublished at 15:06 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

    Chris Medland
    F1 journalist in Barcelona

Fernando Alonso is causing quite the stir with his arrival in the paddock in full McLaren kit. He is still a part of the team of course, competing in the Indy 500 with them this year. In fact, today saw the announcement of the number he will run in this year's race, with 66 chosen as that was the same number carried by Mark Donohue when he won in the McLaren M16 (run by Penske) in 1972.

It's also no surprise that there's a huge amount of interest solely based on location, with Alonso an absolute hero to the Spanish fans. Carlos Sainz might be in a McLaren this year but he doesn't have the same fanbase as Alonso.

Still, I've yet to find a marshalling post round here with a fan club specifically for the double world champion. Whereas another former McLaren driver does have that honour...

Laurent Cossa: Mercedes updates reminding me of all the sprouting bodywork on the 2008 McLaren MP4/23. So much money being spent on micro sculpting of carbon, much of it unpleasant on the eye.

Still no sign of Valtteri Bottas after that earlier problem. At least Lewis Hamilton got 83 laps under his belt.

  20. Postpublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

Sebastian Vettel has closed the gap at the top but is still more than two tenths off Pierre Gasly's 1:17.715. A 1:17.925 is the best a German can muster so far.
