Leclerc and Verstappen are still out there on the soft tyres that they qualified on so I think Lewis will be fine.

  6. You kinda need that front wing, Danpublished at 05:48 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

Eight retirements last season, and he prayed over winter for a better season this time.

Not a great start to the first race, before even reaching the first corner.

    • Max Verstappen second, 14 seconds behind Bottas but neither of the top two have pitted. Charles Leclerc third also yet to come in, Lewis Hamilton fourth and Sebastian Vettel fifth but both have pitted.
    • Daniel Ricciardo, in his first race for Renault, loses his front wing on the opening lap, has to pit and drops down to last, but is now 18th.
    • Robert Kubica has also had to pit early on with a problem for Williams in his first F1 race since 2010.
    • Carlos Sainz is the first man out of the race, with his McLaren on fire in the 11th lap. Sainz escapes the car unhurt.
    • A pit-stop error from Haas sees Romain Grosjean drop down from seventh to 14th.
  10. Blue flags anyone?published at 05:44 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

Daniel Ricciardo has been shown the blue flags as Valtteri Bottas sails past him. That's going to be strange for the Aussie, he hasn't seen those in a while.

    Problems at McLaren #bbcf1

Roxy: Awww Carlos. Is this a sign of what Mclaren are going to be like all season?

Jacqui Baker-Stubbs: Well that was short lived for Carlos Sainz Fingers crossed that Lando Norris can finish!

Kayleigh: Urghh McLaren could you just not?

Rachel T: Ohhhh noooo! Looks like Sainz has Alonso’s car!

  13. Grosjean pitspublished at 05:40 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

That was a terrible pitstop by Haas - they were struggling with the front left tyre. Just as bad as the double-terrible pitstop they did with both Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean in Australia last year.

Gunther Steiner's head will be exploding right about now.

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

Grosjean's race has unraveled. He lost seven seconds [in that pit stop] compared to what other teams are doing and drops him from seventh to the cusp of the points by the time the other teams have come in.

For a team that can qualify sixth, you have to get the pitstops right and they have just thrown away a few points.

  15. Postpublished at 05:39 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

Vettel comes out of the pits in sixth but makes up to fifth, Hamilton also pits and comes out in fourth.

Babatunde Sakiru: False start has always been Lewis problem, I suggest he gets more practice on that.

Denislov Lietnev: I hope Mercedes won't play favorites and just let its two drivers race!

Josh Earl: Really unfortunate for Ricciardo, especially on his home Grand Prix

  19. 'Blow-up'published at 05:32 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

That is an old-fashioned engine blow-up. They will not be salvaging many parts for that. McLaren moved from Honda and are with Renault and Sainz is out of the race through no fault of his own as his car has given up on him in a big way.

  20. McLaren are on firepublished at 05:29 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2019

Just as Zak Brown said the cars were running well, Carlos Sainz's car sets on fire... He pulls into the pitlane.

As he quickly climbs out of the car and gets sprayed with a fire extinguisher.
