Well that was rather eventful. Our morning practice session was cancelled after some ridiculous mishaps with a drain cover, a Williams car, a recovery truck, a bridge, and some hydraulic fluid.

The Formula 2 qualifying session had some action with two marshals being knocked down by the rear wheels of Sean Gelael.

Since then, there have been multiple red and yellow flags, some flames from brake disks, and plenty of drivers going off the track, and some not returning to it.

Charles Leclerc led a Ferrari one-two with an impressive performance in an incident-packed second practice at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The 21-year-old led the way for much of the session and ended it 0.324 seconds ahead of nominal team leader Sebastian Vettel with Lewis Hamilton third.

But Hamilton was 0.669secs off Leclerc's pace as Ferrari made a flying start to the weekend with a heavily upgraded car.

There were two red-flag periods after crashes for Lance Stroll and Daniil Kvyat.

Stroll lost control of his Racing Point at Turn Two early in the session, taking off his front-left corner after losing the rear on the way into the corner.

And Kvyat had a big impact at Turn Seven with about 25 minutes to go, again because of a rear-end snap, heavily damaging the left-hand side of his Toro Rosso.

Renault team boss, Cyril Abiteboul says: "We can't complain, but we just need to take one step at a time and need to understand our competitiveness and reliability.

"We just need to think about tomorrow and Sunday in particular to make a good decision. It's a tricky circuit."

Pierre Gasly went off the track when Grosjean was already in the run off area... that potentially could've been dangerous so he may get a call to the stewards.

Verstappen: "It's really rough on the downshifts."

Engineer: "Standby."

Engineer: "There's quite a bit warm up on the mediums, so push them hard."

Seven-and-a-half minutes to go and Giovinazzi is off again, but no contact with the wall, so once he's done his seven-point turn, he'll be back underway.

• Daniel Ricciardo has retired from this session with damage
• Pierre Gasly has returned to the pits
• Max Verstappen has set the fourth fastest time, but returned to the pits to check the balance of the car
• Lance Stroll has retired after colliding with the wall

Chris Marsh: So a broken Williams (no fault of their own) and a Stroll crash, I'm waiting for "Honda engine failure", "McLaren broken down" or "Could Alonso be returning" for Free Practice bingo.

Alastair Stewart: The key question for #BakuGP is how much wall there will be left when the race is over on Sunday.

There's a lot of work on the front, Max isn't 100 percent happy with the car and how it's feeling. They're balancing the car with the 'heavier members' of the team to try and even it out for Max.

It's one of those really frustrating situations to be in as a driver.

It was only a small mistake. He's hit the wall at a serious speed and the the front left came off (I think) with a very small impact.

Unfortunate...but a mistake on a street track and it's always going to be costly.
