Looking at a replay, Carlos Sainz has gone off wide at the start after someone locked up in front of him, the McLaren man goes through the bollards and then can't correct it in time and wipes out the front left of his car into the wall.

Bottas went to the outside of Hamilton and oh so nearly pulled off a really nice move.

Safety car out on first lap

Reece Young: What has happened to McLaren?

Kayleigh: Great job VB, one guy out of the way, let’s go and catch that Ham please.

Chris Clee: Bottas is just ridiculous. Hamilton wins because he doesn't have a capable team mate. He can't even make a slipstream work for him! It's that simple.

Lando Norris has dropped from eight to 18th, Kevin Magnussen, whose Haas failed to start at the first attempt moment ago in the formation lap, has catapulted himself from 18 to nine.

We've had two sensational races in the past two. What a start here in Russia. A number of drivers had to retreat in some run-off areas, Sainz then is the first to crash, then Lance Stroll in a different area is gone straight away too.

Formation lap time. Kevin Magnussen is left standing. But the Haas man finally gets it going but a moment of panic for the Dane.

  18. Hamilton under investigationpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Lewis Hamilton asked his engineer if he could do his practice start further down because of rubber in the normal area. He was told he could.

Race director's event notes: Practice starts may only be carried out on the right-hand side after pit exit lights and, for the avoidance of doubt, this includes any time pit exit is open for the race. Drivers must leave adequate room on their left for another driver to pass.

"For reasons of safety and sporting equity, cars may not stop in the fast lane at any time the pit exit is open without a justifiable reason (a practice start is not considered a justifiable reason)."
