Lewis Hamilton: Why did we have to serve it? Why not add it at the end of the race?

Mercedes: We have to serve when changing tyres, let's just focus on the race.
Lap 18/53
So Lewis Hamilton has served his 10-second penalty. This is how it now stands...
Lewis Hamilton, while serving his time penalty: This is just ridiculous.

Lap 17/53
Hamilton into the pits. For a 10-second pause, which will seem like an absolute eternity.
Penalty served. He's not happy. He went in first, and has come back out in 11th. Never write off Hamilton though. Never.

Perez is looking quick, he out-qualified the Renaults and dropped back behind them at the start but now he's pushing past them.
Hamilton given double penalty
Amit: If Lewis pits, will he serve a 5s penalty in the pits and have to take the other 5s at the end of the race? They are 2 separate penalties, didn’t think they could be served together?
Nathan: Why don't teams let the drivers decide when they want new tyres? what advantage do Mercedes give lewis by pitting him early?
Sam: I don’t understand why Hamilton is punished when he was given the ok to do it by his team. If it’s the teams fault then they shouldn’t get constructor points for this race and a fine, while Hamilton gets no punishment. He was TOLD to do it!!
Lap 16/53
Danny Ric is into the pits and Renault will be hoping that is his only stop. Lap 16.
Lewis Hamilton: Do not stop me early. Do. Not.

Lewis has got to built enough of a gap, otherwise he'll lose track position to Ocon or Ricciardo, he really needs to build up a gap to fourth place.
Maybe not. Just as I write that, Sergio Perez nips inside a space left by Daniel Ricciardo for fifth.
Lap 15/53
Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul may be getting some ink soon. He has a bet with Daniel Riccardo to get a tattoo of the Australian's choosing if he gets a podium finish.
After Hamilton is pitted, Ricciardo will be in contention as he's currently fifth, one place behind team-mate Esteban Ocon.
A podium shoey?
Mercedes to Lewis Hamilton: Lewis we are going to need to up the pace. We need to clear cars out of our pit window. It won't be long.
Lap 13/53
As it stands Lewis Hamilton is 1.2 seconds clear of Valtteri Bottas on the track, but Hamilton has a 10-second penalty to serve when he pits. At the moment, the drivers second to seventh are all within 10 seconds of Hamilton.
So if Hamilton is going to win this one, he's going to have to weave his way through the field to do so.
Hamilton handed ten-second penalty
Mark Sowton: Will Lewis get penalty points and miss the German GP?
Chris Lord: He is on 8 penalty points, how many penalty points per points penalty? Could he get 2 per 5 second penalty? 12 is a race ban?! 2020 is mad.
petert1401: Bono - spend some time reading the rulebook, you let the team down this week.
Our commentary team believe Hamilton will not be missing the German GP.
Mercedes: We have a 10 second time penalty for those starts
Lewis Hamilton: What happened? What happened!?
Mercedes: Those starts going to the grid, we got five seconds for each. Out of position.
Lewis Hamilton: Where is that in the rule book?

He went out of the pits twice and performed the same illegal practice start each time. Hence why he's being faced with two five-second time penalties.
Lap 11/53
Hamilton has a 55-point lead in the drivers' championship. It would've been even more if he hadn't been given a stop-go penalty a couple of races ago for entering the pit lane when it was closed as Pierre Gasly took the first win of his career.
Another error from Mercedes here in Russia and it has thrown this one wide open.

Ten second time penalty for Lewis, it was bizarre from him really. It's a really poor bit of team work from Mercedes.

The 91st win is not coming today judging by that.
