Hamilton leads but unhappy with tyres

Yas: This is going to be some race to the finish. F1 has got exciting again.

Iro: Is Lewis trying to go to the end? If he pits he can't win. Is he hoping for a safety car.

Abu: This Lewis strategy is feeling similar to China 08....a bit of a pointless gamble to take really....

  3. Team radio to Verstappenpublished at Lap 37/52

"We've got the pace until the end, we just have to make sure we've got the tyres."

  4. Team radio - Hamiltonpublished at Lap 37/52

Hamilton: "The tyres are not going to blow, right?"

Mercedes: "We think it's safe, just a blister."

  5. Postpublished at Lap 36/52

A safety car now would be great news for Lewis Hamilton.

The vibrations coming off that left rear tyres for Lewis Hamilton must be enormous. It is looking really daggy.

Not sure if that's a technical term.

  7. Postpublished at Lap 35/52

Hamilton is unhappy with his tyres and surely has to come in again. He does hold an 11-second advantage.

  8. Postpublished at Lap 34/52

Charles Leclerc has also only stopped the once. He's snuck himself into fourth. Two podium finishes in a horrible season for Ferrari. Will be amazed if he can make it three.

  9. Postpublished at Lap 33/52

Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas both come into the pits. That's our top two. Both on hards and it's a sprint until the end for them. Only an eight-lap stint on the mediums for Verstappen.

Lewis Hamilton inherits the lead, but has only stopped once, with Verstappen and Bottas having stopped twice. Almost 20 laps to go.

  10. Postpublished at Lap 32/52

Daniel Ricciardo has just had an off, but he's OK to continue and he's dropped down to 12th after a starting place of fifth.

Verstappen leading from the two Mercedes

Sho: This is Verstappen's race to lose now. The tyres on both Mercs are degrading like crazy and they're now under threat from both Racing Points now in my opinion.

Amit: Vettel can't blame the team for messing up when he's the one who spun at Turn 1.

Cagey Dub: is Lando’s rear wing moving around more than normal at high speed? Looked very unstable from that onboard with Albon.

  12. Vettel blames teampublished at Lap 31/52

Things are getting spicy over the airwaves for Ferrari. Sebastian Vettel appears to be telling his pit crew that they got it wrong tactically.

"I'll hang in there but you know that you messed up," he says.

This is going to be some soap opera at Ferrari for the rest of this season.

  14. Verstappen keeps one-stop option openpublished at Lap 30/52

    Jennie Gow
BBC Radio 5 live pit-lane reporter

The magic number was lap 27 for Max Verstappen. He had to get that far to keep the option of a one-stopper open for them. He might need to nurse the tyres a bit, but being out at the front of the race is the best place for that.

    Verstappen leads from Bottas

Josh Earl: Mercedes just going for podium now, Hulkenberg is their race. Max will win this no problem now.

Pete Ainsworth: This is more like it. It's unpredictable and this is making it interesting to watch. I don't care who wins so long as the racing is entertaining!

Adam: Verstappen best driver in F1. Would have been winner last 2 years if he had been driving the Mercedes.

  16. Postpublished at Lap 29/52

Kevin Magnussen has a five-second time penalty. He's last anyway. So it doesn't really matter.

  17. Postpublished at Lap 29/52

This is looking like a tactical masterstroke at the moment from Red Bull.

Can Verstappen manage his tyres until the end though, or will he have to dive into the pits again?

He will be aiming to build a commanding lead in the next few laps now to buy him some time in case he needs to pit again.

  18. Postpublished at Lap 28/52

"He must have less pressure in his tyres," says Lewis Hamilton on team radio, when talking about Max Verstappen.

  19. Red Bull winning the pace stakespublished at Lap 28/52

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

It just looks like the Red Bull is quicker! They could revert to a two-stopper and still win this.

  20. Postpublished at Lap 27/52

Verstappen is not behind from long. He goes full attack, around the outside at Luffield to zoom past Valtteri Bottas. He now has the fresher, albeit softer tyres, and has just quickly regained the lead. It took less than one lap.
