  18. Should Albon get that Red Bull seat?published at 15:30 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2020

There are still a handful of seats to be confirmed on the 2021 grid, with the most notable among them the second Red Bull, where Alex Albon is still fighting to convince bosses he should stay. Their preference is to keep him but they want to see more from the British-Thai driver before confirming him, and spins in the last two races harming his chances of strong finishes have not helped.

If they decide to look elsewhere, their options are either Sergio Perez or Nico Hulkenberg, and Perez said on Thursday that for him it was either Red Bull or no racing in 2021.

“There's only one option," the Mexican said. “I've been here for so many years. I want to keep going, I think I'm at the peak of my career. But I also want to keep going with a reason, with a plan, with a good project, so I think if there's not a good project that keeps my motivation to give 100%, I'd rather not take it.

“Plan A is obviously to carry on, Plan B will be to stop for a year, see how I feel without racing, see if I really miss it, if I really want to come back or if there's other series that I'm interested in doing, or if I'd rather just do something else and stay away from motorsport. I have never experienced that, my whole life I've been into it. So I have to see also the life out of the sport, how it is, how it suits me. And then see if I miss it, or I just want to carry on with that life.”

Among the other seats, Alpha Tauri’s Daniil Kvyat said he did not expect to be in F1 in 2021. “I’ve known for a while that the chances of me being here next year are very slim,” he said. “It depends on some very particular scenarios.” His seat alongside Pierre Gasly is expected to go to Japanese Formula 2 driver Yuki Tsunoda, although there is a chance Albon could be put into it if he is dropped from Red Bull.

Haas say they will announce their line-up soon, but it seems pretty much a lock that they will take F2 graduates Mick Schumacher, who is hoping to clinch the title over the final two rounds, and Russian Nikita Mazepin, both of whom come with a financial incentive.
