Have Mercedes produced a tactical masterstroke with that undercut and early Hamilton pit stop?

"The wind is making it super hard for me now."
Lewis Hamilton sets the fastest lap of the race. He's already got ahead of Sergio Perez and is closing quickly on the front two, who are yet to stop.

Anime: What's the point of starting on the mediums if you're going to make your first pit stop so early anyway?

One stopper for Hamilton potentially. Here is the pressure then, how much did Verstappen have in the tank? He has to do a qualifying-style lap now to stay clear of Hamilton.

Rachel T: Lewis is calming keeping Max within reach, biding his time - if that is actually possible at 200mph.
Phillippa Jane: The Midfield battle is going to be so fascinating to watch over 23 races... Especially if we get the racing between Leclerc & Norris throughout the midfield/races.
Hamilton coming in for a change. Mediums off, hards on. Mercedes will be hoping that can take him to the end.
"Ok Lewis, it won't be long. Just close up."
Norris, Leclerc, Stroll, Giovinazzi all in for new tyres as the pit lane sees a flurry of activity.
Verstappen, despite reporting problems, has maintained a same advantage of between 1.5 to 2 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
If the cars don't fall apart or crash it looks like it'll be between those two as Valtteri Bottas is six seconds off the lead in third.

quixoticgeek: Most improved car award for the McLarens? This is Epic!
Reece Young: The McLaren is clearly the third fastest car and with (in my opinion) the best driver lineup they could really be a force this season.
And just as Jolyon says it, Fernando Alonso is the first of the top 10 to dive in for some new boots.

We are expecting a pit stop in the next 10 laps. The safety car will have helped ease to a one-stop race.
The laps we've had behind the safety car, the extra formation lap and the virtual safety car will help slightly elongate this first stint and open the door to a one stop being the better option.
Speaking of Russell, who led the Sakhir Grand Prix in 2020 before some pitstop carnage left him with some of Bottas' tyres stuck on his car before he could only finish ninth, he's down in 16th, with team-mate Nicholas Latifi right behind him.
