Lewis Hamilton fought back from a 10-second penalty for a crash with title rival Max Verstappen to pass Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and claim a dramatic British Grand Prix victory.

Hamilton was blamed for a collision with Verstappen's Red Bull at Copse corner on the first lap of the race, which led to the Dutchman crashing out.

Verstappen, 23, was taken to hospital for precautionary tests after the accident while Hamilton set about trying to win the race.

The Grand Prix was stopped after the incident with Leclerc in the lead from Hamilton and the Ferrari driver held that position until two laps from the end, when the Mercedes driver passed him, ironically, at the same corner at which he had crashed with Verstappen.

The controversial win, in front of a crowd of 140,0000, was Hamilton's eighth in the British Grand Prix and cuts Verstappen's championship lead to eight points after a race that will go down in the annals of F1 history.

Max Verstappen has been taken to hospital for "precautionary tests" after suffering a big accident on the opening lap of the British Grand Prix.

Red Bull driver Verstappen, 23, collided with the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton on the entry to the high-speed Copse corner and suffered what his team boss Christian Horner described as a "51G impact" with the barriers.

The race was red-flagged and Hamilton was later handed a 10-second time penalty by stewards over his role in the crash, but overtook leader Charles Leclerc late on to win the race.

A Red Bull statement read: "Following a first-lap incident at Copse Corner between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton at the British Grand Prix, we can confirm that Max Verstappen walked away from his car and was immediately taken to the Silverstone Circuit Medical Centre.

"Following an assessment by the trackside doctors at Silverstone Circuit Medical Centre, Max Verstappen has been taken to a local hospital for further precautionary tests."

Speaking after the race, F1's medical rescue coordinator Dr Ian Roberts described Verstappen as "a little bit shaken", adding that the hospital visit was for a "routine check-up".

"There is always a possibility of concussion, so we have to try and exclude that. Even if it looks as though there isn't, we keep that very much in mind," he told Sky Sports. "[There are] no other injuries apparent at the moment."

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has also given an update on Verstappen's condition: "He was very heavily winded but he was conscious throughout," the Red Bull boss says.

"It's a precaution that he's gone to the hospital. Thankfully he got out of the car unaided and thankfully, he's OK."

And what did Horner make of the 10-second penalty handed to Lewis Hamilton?

"Wasn't much of a penalty really was it?" he says.

He was three laps away from the third F1 win of his career, but Charles Leclerc gets the Driver of the Day nod from fans on F1's social media channels.

McLaren's Lando Norris, who finished fourth, speaking to Sky Sports: "I can't be not satisfied fourth and fifth as a team, I had a very good race until the pitstop.

"It happens in Formula 1. The boys have done a great job all season, one bad one, you have got to give that. Of course they're going to feel bad - I feel bad - but we will do better next time.

"Of course I was frustrated. Whether I would've finished third place, who knows, but the adrenaline is running your heart is pumping. Whether I would've finished on the podium is tricky.

"I'll try again next year. Although no idea how I am staying in the championship!"

At the start of the day Max Verstappen's lead in the drivers' championship was 33 points, now it's eight.

Jon Harber: Max and Lewis incident I think is a racing incident, it’s a dangerous sport, if it had happened at a slower corner Max may have spun , recovered and Lewis still received a penalty .. stewards decided based on their interpretation of the rules.

S Holt: Both Lewis and Max expected the other to yield. Neither did and there was contact. And Max ended up in the wall.

Robert Gomm: Was Lewis at fault? Yes but Max was too for not giving him room. Max needs to learn he can’t boss every driver around and he has to learn when to back off. Great drive from Lewis to comeback and win.

More from Lewis Hamilton, speaking to Sky Sports in the media pen, responding to Horner's claims: "I just don't feel like [Verstappen] needs to be as aggressive as he is.

"He was going wheel-to-wheel with me... it's cool, there is a lot of F1 history at that corner, I'm sure it looks cool, but you need to give the space. It's never just one person's fault. It's always a balance of the two. I just challenged that energy into the driving.

"I didn't know he was in hospital. It doesn't change [how he feels about] the win, this is racing. I would love to be able to race and for us to give each other space and for us to battle for a long time without colliding - but he was too aggressive and these things are bound to happen.

"There's not a single person who doesn't know how aggressive drivers can be. I hope he's OK.

"I would love to have a wheel-to-wheel battle the whole race. I enjoy racing with him and I'm looking forward to it, but I will never back down from anyone and I will not be bullied, to be less aggressive.

"This weekend we needed the points, there was a gap and I went for it."

Red Bull Christian Horner has just spoken to Sky Sports and he is still furious: "Max has had an accident at 51Gs. [Hamilton] shouldn't be making manoeuvers like that - it's unacceptable.

"The biggest result for us today is Max is uninjured. I hope Lewis is very happy with himself. That is a hollow victory.

"To put a wheel up the inside at a corner like Copse... that, you know, you just don't do that. He was nowhere near ahead and then there was contact. Lewis has got more than enough experience to know that is unacceptable.

"I'm just very disappointed that a driver of his calibre should make a move like that. It's dangerous, it looked desperate."

Dr Ian Roberts, F1 medical rescue coordinator, speaking to Sky Sports, gives an update on Max Verstappen's health: "Max was a little bit shaken but he has gone to hospital for a routine check-up.

"As we were coming round the corner we saw the screen and it looked like we were looking at a roll - fortunately it's wasn't but it was still a pretty impressive impact.

"We try and assess as quickly as possible while he still in the car, but obviously we need to get him out to see what's wrong with him. It's about just trying to relax him because he's trying to get out. Then it's about getting the resources in for a proper assessment.

"There is always a possibility of concussion, so we have to try and exclude that. Even if it looks as though there isn't, we keep that very much in mind.

"No other injuries apparent at the moment."

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas, who finished third: "The weakness today was the start. I was wheel spinning a bit - just like Lewis yesterday.

"That made it a bit more difficult. Obviously we had to react to the stop with Lando at the beginning, we stopped a bit too early to be competitive at the end, but we got Lando and also we helped Lewis to win.

"Really strong weekend for the team. And we'll go again in two weeks' time."

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who finished second, said: "It's difficult to enjoy 100% of course but it's been incredible. I gave all of me but it just wasn't enough in the last two laps.

"We definitely did not expect it. We expected to be competitive after qualifying but not as competitive as now, we were fighting for the win which was. incredible. Overall it's much longer than what we are used to.

"The team is working incredibly well and I'm very proud of them. It's great to have these kind of races it shows that we are doing something right.

"We are working in the right direction and we need to keep going like this. It wont be a smooth ride until we're back at the top."

More from race winner Lewis Hamilton, as he gives his view on the opening lap incident with Max Verstappen: "I just try and stay measured in my approach - particularly with Max, he's very aggressive. And then today, I was fully alongside him and he didn't give me the space, so...

"But regardless of whether I agree with the penalty, I take it on the chin and I just kept working. I wasn't going to let anything get in the way."

Lewis Hamilton, who wins his eighth British Grand Prix: "It's overwhelming. It's was such a physically difficult race, great weather.

"We have got the best. BEST crowd! A home crowd is the best! Thank you guys so much. Honestly, nowhere we go has crowds like this. They ain't got what we got!

"I wish everyone to get home safe but this is a dream today to do this in front of you all. I couldn't have done it without the great work from Valtteri and the whole team.

"It is tough but I have been giving it my all this week. Just trying to discover performance in this car with the guys. I'm just proud of everyone, even though we've had a deficit."

This is how Verstappen's car looked after that first-lap incident. The Dutchman walked away from it, but is undergoing checks in hospital after complaining of dizziness.

It was a frightening crash and hopefully Verstappen will be fully OK to compete again in two weeks' time in Budapest.
