Lando Norris' lap was really fast, he was just behind Ferrari's Carlos Sainz in third. It was his first flying lap of the day, so that's encouraging signs for McLaren. His team-mate Daniel Ricciardo didn't hook it up at all, though.

    Your thoughts on track limits

Kayleigh: Are they enforcing track limits during the race this time? Cause if not, what’s the point?

Jeremiah Kariuki: Drivers picking from where they left yesterday on track limits. Another morning where track limits will be a concern just like reliability issues and spins.

  3. Track limits big news for the second race in a rowpublished at 10:25 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

Remember, in Bahrain, Max Verstappen was instructed to give the lead back to Lewis Hamilton, when he had passed the world champion, but went wide to do so.

Red Bull and Verstappen were not too happy as they said Hamilton had repeatedly gone wide in the same spot earlier in the race and not got punished.

Despite a thrilling finale, the Dutchman could not get back ahead legally and Hamilton won it by seven tenths.

More track limit nonsense. Lando Norris and Fernando Alonso both lose lap times. I get the feeling we might be saying that a bit today.

    Your thoughts on track limits

Paul Fields: Just put a one metre strip of grass between the outer edge of the kerb and the run-off area and everything is solved. Do it for every track, it won’t be faster to go wide, and there won’t be any controversy. If one was being cynical, maybe controversy is desirable.

  6. 'Mazepin giving it some'published at 10:20 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin are both straight out on the soft tyres and have both had times deleted for track limits at Turn Nine - the same corner that everyone else was getting them deleted at yesterday.

Wow, Mazepin giving it some at those apex kerbs at Variante Alta. Locked up the right front, turned in and bounced over the yellow sausage kerb on the inside.

The first of our big hitters has got out there and Charles Leclerc moves to the top with a 1:17.321, although that's well down on the fastest time of yesterday - Valtteri Bottas' 1:15.551.

Only times on the board from eight of the 20 drivers so far, with Mercedes and Red Bull biding their time.

  8. Postpublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

It looks like there's going to be no change for Nikita Mazepin's driving style as he is still fully attacking despite a tough start to life in Formula 1.

He locks up the tyres, bounces over the kerb but avoids going too far off.

  9. Postpublished at 10:11 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

Another track limits breach at Turn Nine, and just as Kimi Raikkonen did, Mick Schumacher has gone too wide and that lap is wiped from history.

Are track limits at Turn Nine going to ruin someone's qualifying later on?

    Your thoughts on track limits

Cactus Jack: Why do we have to continually over the course of a weekend change track limits? Just set a track limit and keep it. If they abuse track limits keep deleting.

Rob Colley: Yeah track limit rules have changed again...

Nick: Why does F1 always try to make itself look like a joke with track limits, just make a rule a keep it for the season (i.e two tyres stay within the white lines at all time every corner).

Track limits at Turn 13 have been changed from what they were yesterday.

  11. Postpublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

We have our first time on the board, then we don't.

Kimi Raikkonen, with the track to himself, has his lap time deleted for exceeding track limits at Turn Nine.

  12. 'Intrigued by Ferrari this season'published at 10:02 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

At the very least, Ferrari seem to have consolidated on picking up from their dodgy year last season, when they were occasionally OK...and occasionally terrible.

They certainly seem to be more consistent from what we've seen so far. Charles Leclerc was lightning-quick yesterday, so I am intrigued by Ferrari.

  19. Mazepin trying too hard - Steinerpublished at 09:50 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

Nikita Mazepin is "trying too hard" at the start of his F1 career, according to his Haas team boss Guenther Steiner.

The Russian driver spun once and crashed in first practice at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on Friday. That follows four spins at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix before he crashed out of the race on the first lap.

"Learning is painful, but at some stage that will hopefully stop," Steiner said.

Mazepin is one of two rookies at the US-based Haas team this year, alongside German Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time champion Michael.

Schumacher also crashed out of the Bahrain race, but has generally had a more controlled start to his F1 career.

  20. Mazepin continues to strugglepublished at 09:49 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

Yesterday was another tough day for F1 newcomer Nikita Mazepin, who has had a shocking start to his Formula 1 career.

In Bahrain, he was slowest in two practice sessions, 19th in another, qualified last and crashed out of the race on the first lap.

It hasn't got much better in Italy as he was 18th in session one and slowest in session two with more spins and crashes as well.
