  1. Perez overtakes Russell for thirdpublished at Lap 37/58

Whether Russell listened to his team or not, Perez gets the job done. The Mercedes just can't hold off a Red Bull for long.

Lewis Hamilton, a master of managing his tyres, is now lurking three seconds behind his team-mate. Is he saving himself for a push at the end? Will experience count?

Leclerc has a four-second lead at the front over Max Verstappen.

  2. Team radio - to Russellpublished at 07:02 British Summer Time 10 April 2022

Team: "Management is more important than position. If you are hurting the tyres to keep Perez behind you can let him by.

Russell: "That's not what I want to hear."

  3. Postpublished at Lap 35/58

Sergio Perez has closed up on George Russell in third. Russell has been told he can let the Red Bull by if he's struggling on the tyres. Not what he wants to hear.

This was a circuit that was becoming outdated for modern Formula One cars. The tweaks they have made have been to try to bring it into the modern era to try to cope with the size and weight of these cars. It seems like a step in the right direction.

Magnussen locks up. His 34-lap-old tyres are dying on him too. Norris gets past and can now set about chasing down Fernando Alonso, another with old tyres.

Magnussen has Norris' McLaren team-mate Daniel Ricciardo for company now.

There are decent gaps between the front five.

Lewis Hamilton getting the DRS on the back of Fernando Alonso makes it stick through Turn One then makes it stick again and can extend that lead going through Turn Two.

  10. Alonso falls back from fourthpublished at Lap 30/58

Sergio Perez gets the job done down the inside on Fernando Alonso to reclaim fourth place. Alonso still hasn't pitted on his hard tyres.

He will have to pit soon but he needs the field to spread out again.

Up front we are settling back into the picture we saw before the safety car. When we do get DRS activated that won't come into play for the top two, the way things stand.

Now Charles Leclerc starts to pull away again. He has built a lead of more than a second over Verstappen.

The field is bunched up behind. Magnussen has a look down the inside of Lewis Hamilton. Norris is eyeing a move on Magnussen too.

    Team: "Confirmed."

Hamilton: "Jeez, I am unlucky with safety cars."

Crucially, in the laps before the safety car, when Max Verstappen was getting his tyres up to temperature, he started putting in the fastest laps of the race.

When they come out of the safety car period who is going to come out best?

Like Russell, Max Verstappen will be another not disappointed with this safety car. Charles Leclerc had a lead of more than eight seconds but now he has the Red Bull right behind him again.
