Charles Leclerc withstood enormous pressure after a spin on his first lap in final qualifying to bounce back and take pole at the Spanish Grand Prix.

The Ferrari driver pulled out a superb performance to demote title rival Max Verstappen's Red Bull to second.

The world champion was fastest on the first laps but suffered a loss of power on his final lap that meant he was unable to respond to Leclerc's pace.

George Russell was fourth for Mercedes' best performance of the season.

Team-mate Lewis Hamilton was sixth fastest, behind Red Bull's Sergio Perez. Carlos Sainz was third in the second Ferrari at his home race.

  9. 'Anything can happen'published at 16:31 British Summer Time 21 May 2022

Carlos Sainz, who will line up third on the grid: "It's been a tough weekend so far.

"The conditions have been difficult with the wind but today we managed to put a decent lap and that allows us to fight from there tomorrow.

"I think the key will be the start, the tyre management, see if we can get a good start and go from there. It's a decent position to start.

"I think anything can happen and we will try our best."

  10. 'I would have liked to go for that final run'published at 16:29 British Summer Time 21 May 2022

Max Verstappen, who suffered issues at the end of qualifying and will start second on the grid: "I mean it’s always difficult to tell but I couldn’t do my final run, either the DRS didn’t open or I just lost power.

"It’s a bit of a shame but I think overall to be on the front row for us here looking at the whole weekend so far I think it was a good achievement, but of course I would have liked to go for that final run.

"Last two races we seemed pretty decent on the tyres, of course tomorrow again will be very hot, very warm. This track will be quite tough to pass but let’s see, hopefully of course our car will again be kinder on the tyres but it’s a bit difficult to tell at the moment."

  11. 'It went extremely well'published at 16:26 British Summer Time 21 May 2022

Charles Leclerc, who will start on pole: "I feel good. It was a very, very difficult session - especially in Q3, as I did a mistake on the first run and then I only had one lap.

"But it went extremely well. I had a bit of moments on my lap but at the end made it stick. Very, very happy with pole position and the car was amazing too.

"I am in a strong position to start the race, but I've been struggling with tyres compared to Red Bull, so if we don't manage those tyres well, we will lose that win.

"So, we need to get on top of it and do a good job tomorrow with tyre management."
